Me personally, I try to avoid illegal downloading as much as I think is reasonable, but as ethical infractions go, I'd put it somewhere below jaywalking (especially if you don't have a lot of money).

I truly think it is a generational thing. I grew up buying records, cassettes and 8-tracks. I didn't download my first album (legally or illegally) until five year ago. I prefer the physical copy.

So if you be doing illegal downloading, there must be a chance you could get caught. Big or small chance is still chance. Does this affect anyone's choices?

I'd only worry if a small amount of people were pirating (though, even then, it wouldn't make me worry much). I doubt anyone in a superior position puts in enough effort to actually catch individuals who pirate (though sources of pirating and etc. might be shut down).

Yeah I've always been confused by the term "illegal downloading" because the illegal part has always made me think that you could get in trouble for doing it. I've heard stories about people being arrested and caught by the RIAA for downloading and that the government or law officials may be able to tell what's on your computer (like how people get caught with child pornography etc.) through some device, and all this made me avoid doing it for a while. I don't usually illegally download and I do buy physical albums, but sometimes, especially if an album is really expensive or is hard to find, then I will pirate.

I guess it depends on where you are, the government here are so laid back about it that EMI tried to sue them a few years ago over it, came to nothing in the end though to the best of my memory.

People do get caught, but generally it's people who are illegally downloading on a public, monitored wifi (e.g. college students downloading music on their college wifi). If you're doing it at home on your private wifi and are semi-cautious, chances are you won't be caught.

There might be a crack of dawn raid tomorrow and they might arrest you and all the others Shocked It's like how they say "it's far too quiet" in the movies and then something bad happens. It could be all about to play out and prove some global conspiracy.

I was less comparing vinyls to books as I was comparing what I saw Romanelli talking about, which seemed to be the kind of sacred nature of the physical copy of music, which I felt was similar to the feelings people have about books.

Yes, I just took the opportunity to discuss it regardless. Razz I think I'll create a thread for interesting vinyl and vinyl packaging.

I guess downloading the album doesnt hurt the artist if you werent going to purchase it it anyway.

This is so true. If I paid for all the music I had I wouldn't listen to nearly as much music. I'd never have bought a Metallica album, but when I found some on my friend's computer I was like "well, might as well copy these." Isn't it better for the band that I hear the album and get a chance to fall in love with it than I write it off as not worth it and never become a fan?

Also a conversation like this necessitates mention of In Rainbows, so I'll point out that 2 out of 5 people paid for the album. That is, 2 out of 5 fans liked the band enough to give them money when they didn't have to. If you're good to your fans and don't complain about pirating, you'll find ways to make money:

I download - illegally, by the way, as though it needed any clarification - everything I want to hear, and then make an effort to purchase the things I really, really like. I spend around £300 a month on records (or at least I have done whenever I've been earning a wage, which includes the last three months), and so the music industry (and anybody else, for that matter) can go fuck themselves if they think I'm the enemy.
