I say ban gay marriage. I mean if we allow them to marry, what's next? Legalize murder? We may as well just kiss society as we know it goodbye. [color=white]Satire![/derp/color]
True that, burn them I say
Hmm...
Not really what I expect from music lovers.
You don't see the sarcasm here?
For Romanelli. Don't know if you heard any of the following, but still.. Maybe a bit different to what you're describing
Track 1: Great lyrics. Like the rapper. But unfortunately, the music track took about 20 seconds of thought. Loop a beat and a few seconds of an accordion track over and over...that's the whole song. There's no change, no song structure at all. It's just a rap over a non-ending loop. If the song were over 2:00 long, I'd be pulling my hair out.
Track 2: A Tribe Called Quest had all the right ideas. Hip hop, to me, is the perfect opportunity for artists to blend different styles of music. Not just throw samples from different genres into a song, but really come up with something different. ATCQ did it. Public Enemy did it. Not enough of others do it. I like this track, I like this album. I just wish there was more like it out there. These guys worked hard on the music tracks. Unlike many in the genre, the music doesn't sound like an afterthought.
Track 3: His voice is annoying, but again, the lyrics are good. The music track sounds forced and clunky...there was obviously an effort to make something that didn't fit the beat work. The track is very poorly edited, as you can hear the stops and starts all over the place.
you can like it or dislike it, but you cannot deny that there is alot of work put into them.
O.K. right then.
But what I'm asking is, if MBDTF is the very best that genre of music has 2 offer, yet one does not appreciate it.
Why should that person keep trying 2 like that genre when it is all sub-par by comparison
.
Well the best album of a genre is of course only an opinion, mine is that MBDTF is far from the best. Nas' Illmatic for me is the pinnacle of hip hop so check that out.
Here's my attempt to convince the sceptics, nothing too heavy so I'm not gonna throw in some Biggie or Wu Tang but if you can't appreciate any of these tracks then you're probably best off giving up on the genre.
Very good picks. I wouldn't place Manuva quite on the same level as Nas, Jurassic 5 or Mos Def & Talib Kweli (what a record this one!), but you probably wanted to show that UK rap was a fact

Glad you took the time to listen the songs and write this... I picked those songs because I feel they (and the artists they are from) are different than what people generally expect in this genre. Maybe the Madvillain song isn't really the best example of a great stand alone track and works best in an album with other tracks that are in similar vein - short tracks (1-3 minutes), mostly structureless and maybe a bit one-dimensional (though I personally love most of music tracks despite that), that work fantastically well together (and with the continuity between tracks, the whole package sounds a lot more varied and interesting)
Glad you like ATCQ, though interestingly enough, this album is the one that I wanted to like more than I actually did when I listened to it. And my main complaint was, ironically, that it's not varied enough (while I loved the sound). But it's been a while since I last listened to it...
I think I know what bothers you in the last track, but I'm pretty sure that the way it was edited wasn't by "accident" and very much intentional. I picked it because it's one of those hip hop songs, which doesn't stay the same throughout, but has a structure. + it builds a nice, mystic atmosphere (actually the whole album does that, and it is actually one of my very favourite albums of 2011). But I can totally understand if it's not your taste.
I've been trying to get a grasp on hip hop since day 1. Here's where I'm at so far.
There are some really great lyricists out there. But the window of subject matter has always seemed rather small. And musically, for the most part, hip hop is desperately empty for me. It's not about a group of musicians getting together and creating a song...much of it is a producer putting bare bones backing tracks, usually consisting of a cheap computerized beat and maybe a weak synthesizer loop, on a track and recording the vocal over it. On many songs, you take the rapper away and you have a track that would pout Mel Torme to sleep.
As a musician, that is tough to get past.
Sampling can be an art, but it's mostly rushed and cheap sounding. Speeding up tracks so they sound like chipmunks does not make your music sound better. Blatantly reworking older songs to fit the genre makes you sound like you don't really care too much about what you do.
I'm persevering, though. I quit on hip hop altogether a few years ago, but I'm slowly reopening that door. I really WANT to like it, because the idea of hip hop is great. Take some time on the backing tracks and use some creativity in areas other than lyrics. Don't be satisfied with music that sounds like a cheap porn soundtrack with a beat. There are people who PLAY drums and PLAY bass...utilize them! Your music doesn't have to sound like a computer with one bass note.
I'm saying that hip hop could do a better job. Yes, sites like this are used to rock. Rock is still better musically, and it's hard to convert people from rock to hip hop when the product is not musically up to par.
My observation, my opinion.
I take it you don't appreciate much electronic music either?
