This. Anybody who thinks that Prince had less variety than MJ clearly hasn't listened to a lot of Prince. I find that perhaps the most bizarre of all the arguments made in this thread, and that is no small feat.

Yeah, that's definitely a strange argument. Just on the Hits/B-Sides collection Prince is all over the place. That said, I vastly prefer Michael Jackson, he was my hero once upon a time, while I've never succeeded in getting into Prince, despite numerous attempts. Then again I have big problems with any music approaching funk, and he has got a lot of funk in him, even if he did other stuff as well. I do like a few songs, at least.

I'm finding it hard to think of any artist who worked in a wider variety of styles than Prince. Bowie perhaps.

Exactly. Arguing that Jackson was more talented or made better music is one thing, but arguing that he had more variety than Prince is ignorant at best and disingenuous at worst.

Well, there's Paul McCartney for a start.

I voted for Prince for his productivity (and his musicianship). On quantitative terms alone, MJ doesn't even come close.

I voted a bit too fast. The question being "who is the king of pop?".
My answer: neither.

Okay, that's two. The point is, Jackson doesn't even register when it comes to musical diversity.

Actually, Zappa did spring to mind when I wrote that but I don't know nearly enough about him.
