First album without Peter Gabriel and with Phil Collins singing lead vocals. Still quite prog-y and proved they were more than a backing band for Gabriel (which most people assumed at the time.) Phil Collins only sang the vocals because they couldn't find anyone else to do it.
Tony Banks carried the band during this time as he was the only one to have a hand in writing every song on the album. Dance on a Volcano, Squonk, Robbery, Assault and Battery and Los Endos are my favorites.

You have to think of Genesis as three bands. Most people say two; Gabriel-led and Collin- led. But I say Gabriel-led, then the foursome with Hackett still the guitarist (even if it is only for two albums), and then the move to shorter more poppier music with just Collins, Banks, and Rutherford.
I happen to like all versions of Genesis. I love the Gabriel stuff and there is merit to a great deal of the Collins stuff as well. I might be in the minority...

Their most accessible album under Gabriel to start with? _________________ ''Isn't He A Bit Like You and Me?''

I often think of Genesis in these stages:
01) Finding their way = first 2 albums
02) 70s peak = 3rd album thru The Lamb
03) Finding their way after losing members = TOTT thru ATTWT
04) Climbing towards pop = Duke thru Invisible Touch
05) Reexamining their past from pop = their last 2 albums
That's just being simplistic. It's quite difficult to dissect any band this way whose career basically spanned 30 years. I could break it down further but suffice it to say that their creative peak lasted from "selling england..." thru "trick of the tail" and their pop peak lasted from their self-titled album thru "we can't dance". Again, that's simplifying what was going on.
As to TOTT, it was quite an accomplishment for them to carry on with their progressive sound to such quality after PG left. Awesome album, but i'm a jaded, long-time genesis fan. _________________ fav artists NOW | ALL-TIME favs | i listen 2 more music than u so u don't have 2!

I'd also suggest Selling England by the Pound. Then Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and The Lamb. Trespass, their second album also is often forgotten but its worth a listen, too.
A Trick of the Tail is my favourite post Gabriel Genesis album and overall the fourth after the Foxtrot-Selling England-The Lamb trio. It's an excellent prog rock album from a year when the genre already started to lose its popularity. Genesis still managed to make very good (prog rock) albums after the departing of Gabriel, first with Hackett then as a trio as well.

Had Selling England By The Pound on a few times today. It's good, in places exceptional; especially the opener and closer. _________________ ''Isn't He A Bit Like You and Me?''
