That's despicable (then again the Academy Awards are a sham anyway). Just checked out your imdb list, you have an amazing taste in movies.

Yeah and all have been nominated (though not necessarily for director) so what's your point?

Not quite sure how they're a sham? One od the greatest actors to ever grace the screen Peter OToole never won a competitive oscar that doesn't male them a sham. For his greatest performance O'Toole was up against Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird, another truly great performance, and lost.

Point is - there's always context to consider rather than just isolate your faves and complain.

edir: Having said all that I don't think I'll ever understand Sergio Leone being nominationless...

My point is less that they don't get one - because hey, there can only be ten winners a decade - but more that Kevin Costner has any while they don't.

Not yetttttt - I was supposed to see it with a friend but she cheated and saw it first. Is it a theater kinda movie? Should I watch it in a theater?

I haven't seen it yet Sad I've been waiting in anticipation for the past few weeks, avoiding anyone from telling me anything detailed about the plot Laughing It isn't playing anywhere near me.. I'm away school right now, and I think the closest theater playing it is in Detroit somewhere. So I'm waiting until next month when I'm in Toronto to see it. I just hope it's still in theaters by then Confused

By the looks of it, it's worth watching in a theater though. Apparently it's one of his more beautifully shot films.

Woah, where the fuck are you, Windsor?

And yeah, you're probably right - but I hate theater crowds.

Yeah. I'm at the U there. It isn't the best city Laughing

And for the most part, I agree Embarassed Plus, there's something about the carpets in theaters that make me feel disgusting. Last time I saw a movie in a theater was for Her, which was definitely worth it though.

Ok, so first off, while I don't really like Costner in anything other than Dances with Wolves, I think Dances with Wolves is fucking amazing.

Second, the biggest competition that year was Goodfellas, for which Scorsese was nominated for best director. (Scorsese later went on to win best director for The Departed, which I think most people feel was well deserved). IMO this was a tossup, but I support the decision to name Costner best director over Scorsese.

When you say "Kevin Costner has an Academy Award for best director" it makes it sound like the academy is full of shit, but when you realize that award was for Dances with Wolves, it makes damn good sense (to me at least).

Kubrick was the only one from your list that REALLY surprised me. Looking back, he was nominated four times for best director: 1965 for Dr. Strangelove (lost to George Cukor for My Fair Lady), 1969 for 2001: A Space Odyssey (lost to Carol Reed for Oliver!), 1972 for A Clockwork Orange (lost to William Friedkin for The French Connection), and 1976 for Barry Lyndon (lost to Milos Forman for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). I don't really have much to say about that I just thought it was interesting. I haven't seen all these movies or the ones that beat Kubrick, but the ones I have seen are all fantastic films.
