- Post subject: "Voodoo Chile", best hard rock song ?
|
Was listening to Pandora this morning and it was playing a series of hard rock/ metal tracks..Metallica, Pantera, Godsmack ,etc, and then "voodoo Chile" by Jimi Hendrix comes on and clears the air taking its place as the best hard rock track in my opinion, although "Stairway to Heaven" and "Helter Skelter" would be my other choices for the best....Opinions?

Yeah Stairway would take a popularity vote, But I prefer Black Dog, such an awesome song, I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. I never even thought about Voodoo Chile' I'll have to give it another listen _________________ Having a family is the kind of thing that could be held against a person

Voodoo Chile might not be the BEST, but you could say it was in the top 10-even top 5-and I'd agree with you. You can make an argument for it being the best, certainly.
"Stray Cat Blues" by the Rolling Stones, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" by AC/DC, Bad Company's eponymous song, "Heartbreaker" by Led Zeppelin and "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age are all contenders too. Then again, it's so hard to define "hard rock", you know? _________________ I love all music. It makes you feel like living. Silence is death.

I love this question but I also have a problem with it.The problem being that I could spend a week on coming up with an answer. There are so many great hard rock songs. But after spending a week coming up with one I would probably come up with what I thought was a better one 5 minutes after I submitted it.So I will raise the bar very high for this one. This song must have great music on it.With commanding drumming, heavy duty bass, blistering guitar, epic vocals,& pfofound lyrics all enveloped within resounding ambience. For me there is one song that best meets & then exceeds all of my criteria for best hard rock song.

I agree with all of the comments...I think I just got excited when I heard "Voodoo Chile" on Pandora...I hadn't heard it in years and it really got to me.

i don't think that any of the songs mentioned before have at best 10% of the genius of "voodoo Chile". "When The Levee Breaks-LZ" , "Sweet Child O' Mine- G'N'R"and "Smoke on the Water-DP" can claim being 70% as good

Yeah, it's definitely up there. I think someone else mentioned it, but the only one that I can think of right now that could rival it is Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks."

Voodoo Chile is sensational, I think it's one of his very best recordings. It was kind of the flagship of his live sets with the Experience, and it functioned as the spiritual show stopper that "Machine Gun" would ultimately assume in the Band of Gypsies set. Out of the haphazard Woodstock performance, Voodoo is the only number that still gives me occasional chills.
I think "Won't Get Fooled Again" is number one though in terms of greatest hard rock song, as in best written. Although as a total dork who actually favors hard rock music over "correct" or "smart" music, my personal favorite is "Stargazer" by Rainbow. That song is huge. Also basically anything from Sabbath. Great call on "Heaven and Hell", Gary.
