Math rock is basically post - hardcore with odd rhythmic experimentation (basically experimental post - hardcore). However, there are probably more complex ways to describe it, but that's the easiest way to explain it to people. Here's a group of math rock albums which I love (Polvo is good too btw):

I don't know exactly what post hardcore is. I think the best way to describe it is to say it's a genre based on rhythmic experimentation, as you said, and mostly instrumental. Seems a bit generic like this, though. I think the best way to get it is to listen to something.

Only listened to the first two songs. The second one is really something awesome, love those riffs in the background with that "lazy" voice on them. And then it changes in something even better.
