I don't know about the best.. but I think 2002 was underrated and had a lot of things going for it. Of course there were albums like YHF and Yoshimi, but more importantly there were the boundary pushing albums. Sigur Ros' "()" or Basinski's "Disintegration Loops" displayed music that spoke for itself. On the opposite spectrum the existential lyricism of albums like "Lifted", "Tallahassee", and "Execution of All Things" showed how refreshing it is to hear ideas that are intelligent and profound. Songwriting was just a bit more serious, from Beck's "Sea Change" to Damien Rice's "O".. as if Elliott Smith's influence was at an all-time high. Somewhat new acts like The Black Keys weren't lame yet, and older well esteemed acts like Johnny Cash showed us they still had it.

I do think that MPP is a phenomenal album (THAT's what I keep forgetting to add to my overall chart, thank you) but it's not enough to save 2009 for me. I just find it a really underwhelming year.

I think the particular statement that any years sucks protrudes with a high amount of ignorance. I personally think that most years are equal in terms of quality (maybe except a majority of the 50's and 60's) mainly because they vary quite a bit in what's there. I'm not going to make a claim I know every year's releases off the top of my head. Hell, I barely remember when half the albums in my collection were released, but most years have quite a few amazing albums. If the list neither I nor Squishy could convince you it's not a weak year, then it'd be difficult to otherwise, but I might even go onto arguing that 2009 could be the 2nd or 3rd best year regarding music within the decade of the 00's (the 2000's 1990's are my favorite decades so this isn't exactly a small statement). Even Bill Callahan (Smog) released his most impressive album that year! I'm aware you're not the only to hold the particular sentiment that that 09 was weak, but it really isn't. You just haven't heard enough from that particular year (unless you have heard a lot more than I think you have which would make me still question your claim) to actually make that claim. I don't think I've heard enough to make a claim that it's one of the best years of the 00's, but it's still far more impressive than you might think.

With albums like Selling England by the Pound, Dark Side of the Moon, Houses of the Holy, Tubular Bells, Pronouced Lynyrd Skynyrd and others, 1973 is a pretty good one, if not the best year for music.

This may not contribute much, but ...

According to the BEA database, 1967 was the best year, followed by 1969, 1971, 1991, 1994, 1997, 1973 and 2007.

Notably bad years were 1981, 1974, 1990, 1982, 1983

Not sure what that means. After all, they're only numbers ...

1981 is really short on major releases but a pretty phenomenal year for post punk.

Michael Jackson basically owned music those early 80s years and the shift of focus went to music videos and the gritty underground

1981, whilst far from being a favourite of mine, saw some damn fine releases, particularly in reggae.

1981 was a fantastic year for music in ex-Yugoslavia, but this isn't early 2013 so I'm not going to promote this further. I think the chart still exists if you're interested.

1980 will forever be my favorite year, even if obv just going off albums and singles cuz it was before my birth. 2003 is my favorite during my lifetime, not everybody's cup of tea but has most of my personal modern favorites so yeah. 2013, 1977, 1969, 1988, 1992, 1995, 2005, 2004 and 1987 are other favorites. And yes 1981 was actually a very strong year, it just depends how you look at
