I'm not saying people are incapable of thinking for themselves, but I'd be interested to see the results of this poll if it had gotten, say, an 8.1 instead. The review bestowed upon the album 'instant classic' status, and it seems to now be very much the concensus that MBDTF is a modern masterpiece, not only held up as Kanye's best but often as hip-hop's best. Which, naturally, I find laughable, but BAWPs love pompous shit. |
The thing for me is that, as an overall album, MBDTF just works so perfectly that it's hard to think of many rap albums that are better in that sense. But as far as just the rapping and lyrical content go, no, it's not even nearly the best.
tl;dr:
MBDTF is possibly the best rap ALBUM.
MBDTF is not even remotely the best RAP album.
Nope. That doesn't make sense either. I cannot figure out how to articulate what I'm trying to say.

No, I totally understand what you're trying to say. MBDTF is quite possibly the greatest hip-hop album ever without containing anywhere near the greatest rapping ever. Many of the best hip-hop albums don't contain what I would describe as the best rapping. However, in the case of this particular album, I respectfully disagree. Out of interest, how many hip-hop albums do you reckon you've listened to as a rough estimate? _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

It's all about production. Bigger, louder, faster. Everything needs to be amped up. Do away with subtlety. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

I've done complete discographies for:
Nas
Jay-Z
NWA (and its' members)
Public Enemy
Run DMC
LL Cool J
Kool G Rap
The Notorious BIG
Kanye (obviously)
Eminem
Wu-Tang
I've also listened to a large number of golden age albums ('87 - '96), at least ten for each of those years, including all the essentials (as in "Paid in Full" level essential). That's hardly "rap expert" territory but it is a fairly good sampling.

Well this had no effect on me because I barely even knew about Pitchfork when I fell in love with MBDTF.

I actually hated it when it was hyped out, but ended up liking the production/etc
