Just some quick comments on my nom here. I discovered Esoteric through the Penguin Guide to Jazz while I was exploring the mid-50s. I do have a soft spot for piano jazz, but this seems to hit all the right notes for me and I still use it as chill-out music, especially at night as I'm going to sleep. It's not the most BEA-friendly thing in the world and it may strike you as a bit stuffy, but do give it a chance.

I hate to say it, but Al Haig felt pretty average to me. 1st Day In wasn't necessarily my thing, but it was certainly unique, and quite enjoyable at times. Vote to Charlie.

Liked them more or less equally, i.e. it's OK.

1st Day In is a fun small pop affair, I don't remember any tune from it but it didn't offend me. Esoteric is not my type of jazz, liked the bass on one or two numbers.

So how do I do this? I'll be utilitarian. While I can't imagine myself playing 1st Day In ever again (not that it's particularly bad, but why would I?), I certainly can picture myself putting that piano record for some early summer evening suave preliminaries.

Al Haig Trio, then. Could be useful.

Respect to Al Haig for being a genre I'm not that into and keeping my attention. Still, it's a genre I'm not that into. This one's easy for me - Charlie Nobles put out a wonderful album that you can hear a lot of what was bubbling up for the 2000s in, I know people have said it sounds "samey", but it came out before Rooney, Franz Ferdinand, and etc were doing things that sound the same. Also, lyrically, it's actually a wonderful album if you listen in. A bit dated, of course ("I use DOS 8.3" being a joke about how many versions of DOS were coming out in rapid succession, he thought by the time the album was out they'd be on 8.3 ... he's still surprised it was ever replaced), but very funny. You also get weird tracks like "PC Werewolf" and "Just Kidding", where he does things vocally that pop just doesn't do.

Pretty much this.

1st Day In reminded me of 80s/90s Kiwi rock. Except where their idiosyncrasies were incredibly charming, Charlie Nobles' were often annoying.

Whereas I've found this great use for ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz........
