This is a wonderful album. Admittedly, I don't listen to this - or Tortoise in general - as much as I should, but this is beautiful. I echo what Kiki said, even with Djed's length, it's so accessible that I just have the urge to listen to it as many times as I want. _________________

I just heard this two or three weeks ago, coincidentally. I recommend it; it's quite soothing.

I prefer TNT, this is great too though, although Djed is head and shoulders above the other tracks

The signature synth (organ) sound on this album paired with marimba/vibraphone can sound tacky on any other album but the underwater(?) production of McEntire makes it feel weirdly at home, i.e. like whales wailing in the distance or sth (with a lot of help from found sound, tape loops, noise, masterful rhythm section, etc.) Also when I saw them live it was the first time I came across a concretion of my idea of live music which comprises of sensible people standing there listening to the fucking music; although this may seem ridiculous to people who want their live music as a energy boost compared to their headphone experience and maybe they're right because essentially Tortoise (and other acts whose shows I like; shoegaze bands for instance) are studio-based musicians that tweak and experiment with instruments and gear and stuff so why would you prefer their live shows to the works of more crowd-stirring showmen? Well because I hate phonies and it's very unlikely for me to see you go berserk over a song you've played thousands of times for the hundredth time on stage and think to myself "oh man look at this man; how genuinely excited he is to be playing for me and he doesn't really do this because he's supposed to do it". Besides, although I go there for the sound, people murmuring and screaming is not the one I'm looking for. _________________ "I feel like for the last two years there’s been sort of a sonic evolution happening and I’ve been experimenting more and more."

I feel like this is the foundation for TNT, you have your droney minimalist post-rock which is beautiful, but I think that they developed their sound well by adding jazz fusion tones in TNT, which just adds spice to the mix. This is still great though, I have to echo what others have said about Djed, it overshadows the others massively. _________________

One of the defining albums of the Chicago post-rock scene in the 90s this albums still blows me away with its stunning beauty and cinematic feel. Djed, Glass Museum and The Taut and Tame are probably my faves but the entire album transports me to the land of nod like few others. An ambient masterpiece.
