Otherwise I'm good.

I agree. I also agree with what CubaZed said, Mommy was certainly a strong contender.

One of the saddest exclusions is the fact that Life Itself didn't get nominated for Best Documentary Sad Apart from the fact that it's a great documentary, it's the dude who lived a breathed movies for his entire life. Bit disappointing, even with this surprisingly strong year for documentaries.

I was hoping to see Gone Girl would get a best picture nomination.
Also not nominating Jake Gyllenhaal for best actor is really stupid.

Also, from what I'm understanding, The Lego Movie may not of been nominated because it had live action shots in it. Which is still ridiculous.

Whiplash and Birdman were both disqualified from the Best Original Score category because 'drumming isn't a score' apparently.

Mommy wasn't eligible. Its US release date is later this month so it'd be eligible for next years oscars.

Yeah I don't think this is true.

From what I know, Birdman was disqualified, because parts of its score used excerpts from previously recorded classical music. Whiplash was disqualified because the music wasn't written originally for the movie (edit: at least all those jazz pieces I guess?). I can understand the latter, but the Birdman exclusion is idiotic. It should win, too...

It was Canada's submission this year... Think It'd be weird if it was deemed eligible after that. The rules say that the submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2013 and 30 September 2014, which it would fall under. Plus, Timbuktu hasn't been released in the states either if I'm not mistaken.

And it probably isn't, but that seems to be the only reason people can think it wasn't nominated.

Hmmmm, maybe I got that wrong. Foreign language must be under different eligibility dates.

I believe as long as it is screened in America in a festival or unionized setting it is allowed. I saw it playing at a DGA union screening in LA so it should have been eligible.

I hope you're right though, critics loved it and it really is a beautiful movie, still glad Ida was nommed though.

Nice! I'm super keen to see it.

On a further examination, it didn't even make the shortlist:

But as always with the oscars it's often really hard to make a field of 5 in competitive years. And I adored Ida too.

also Here's the Force Majeure director reacting to not getting nominated (when I guess it was considered a near lock for the category):

My finalized predictions:

Picture: Boyhood
Director: Richard Linklater
Actor: Michael Keaton
Actress: Julianne Moore
Supporting Actor: J.K. Simmons
Supp. Actress: Patricia Arquette
Original Screenplay: Birdman
Adapted Screenplay: The Imitation Game
Animated Film: The Tale of Princess Kaguya (okay, so we all know it's going to be HTTYD2, but I can dream, can't I??)
Foreign Language Film: Ida
Documentary: Citizenfour
Doc. Short: Crisis Hotline
Live Action Short: The Phone Call
Animated Short: Feast
Original Score: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Original Song: Everything Is Awesome!!
Sound Editing: American Sniper
Sound Mixing: Interstellar
Production Design: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Cinematography: Birdman (though I really hope Ida gets it)
Makeup & Hairstyling: Foxcatcher
Costume Design: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Film Editing: Boyhood
Visual Effects: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

(DOFPOTA had better win something after Andy Serkis getting almost no love from awards ceremonies so far)
