2000 IN FULL EFFECT

The Albums:
(The Boring Edition)

Voodoo - D'Angelo

swhaze wrote:
So here we have 'voodoo'. An album so repetitive and similar sounding, that it will indeed send you into a trance. A trance of complete boredom. The 'songs' all run into one, monotonous dirge with each of the titles sounding as if they have been recorded in the same lazy session.

For me, this may be the worst album on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Dopethrone - Electric Wizard

Hopelessly boring

I guess this deserves more words on the matter. Being flippant aside: I genuinely can barely stand anything about band. Why? Well...

Everything about this band, and especially this album, reeks of trying too hard. It wants so badly to be the heaviest and doomiest thing ever. Oh boy does it ever try, right down to the ultra fuzzy and dense production job. One of the few things I will give this album credit for: the guitar tone is legitimately pretty great. Too bad it wasn't used for better music.

The riffs on this album are insanely boring. There, I said it. They're HEAVY, sure, but they're completely uninteresting and frankly, not that special or memorable. Pretty much all of them makes me wish I was listening to another doom band instead of blowing over an hour listening to this shit. Speaking of that, this album is fucking long as hell and it does very little to actually being that long. Unlike some other doom bands who made a living off longer songs (the first Cathedral - an obvious influence here - and RevBiz come to mind), this album just drags. EW's pacing skills are absolutely putrid on everything i've heard of them, but none more so than on this album. It just drones on. The distorted vocals here are fucking horrendous to boot.

So sure, yeah, they're heavy. But they do it in the dumbest way possible, and at the end of the day, it matters little if you can't back it up with good songwriting. If anything ever screams 'grossly overrated', this is it.

Fuck Electric Wizard.

And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out - Yo La Tengo

73 minutes of droning with whispered vocals and no melodies = boring. This may be the most overrated album of all time.

Really boring. I bought this years ago and over the years I've kept trying to like it, but I've come to the conclusion recently that's it's just a well produced yawnfest. Would like my money back but it's not a restaurant I suppose. Agreed that "Let's Save Tony Orlando's House" is a good song. But that doesn't balance out the seemingly prozac inspired blankness and blandness of the rest of it. It's velvet gloved drudgery.

Parallel Dimensions - Theo Parrish

never thought I would ever say this but there is not enough happening on this album

Flood - Boris

So much potential here, absolutely wasted. One of the laziest executions ive ever heard.

The buildup is honestly the best part of this album; the eventual rollicking doom epic isn't intense enough to get proper catharsis from and to describe the last 20 minutes or so as "taxing" would be a tremendous understatement-an entire third of the album, reserved for Krautrock-style noodling! Interesting and ambitious, but not one of Boris' finer albums.

The Singles:

Link

Gravel Pit - Wu-Tang Clan
"Follow me, Wu-Tang gotta be the best thing since Starks in Clark Wallabees".

Link

I Try - Macy Gray
"I play it off but I'm dreaming of you, and I keep my cool but I'm fiendin'".

Link

Overload - Sugababes
"Train comes, I don't know its destination, it's a one-way ticket to a madman's situation".

Link

All the Small Things - Blink-182
"Late night, come home, work sucks, I know".

Link

What's Up Fatlip? - Fatlip
"Ain't got no homies that got my back, yeah I'm a brother but sometimes I don't feel black".

Rock the vote.

Not too fussed about the singles from Squishy's team (besides Gold Panda's excellent 'You'), but that album selection is very good indeed. I don't love Cosmogramma as much as Flying Lotus' other records (even though it's still great), but seeing The Books and Erykah Badu made me smile. Great choices.

This matchup is extremely even. Nice variety from each team to display the well-roundedness of the year. That Blink 182 single may have sold me on 2000 if I were a 13 year old boy in the peak of puberty, but I dunno what Skinny's tryin' to pull off with that one.

It's tough to imagine voting against a team with both Voodoo and Parallel Dimensions, but I still have some listening to do.

I can already tell this is going to be a ridiculous amount of fun.
