LP1 by FKA Twigs
The sexy debut album from semi-R&B artist, FKA Twigs. Unfortunately, most of the discussion of it on the forums centered on what Pitchfork thought, but here are the few snippets I could find:
Freddie55 wrote: | Lovely voice and interesting in a Kate Bush kind of way. |
RepoMan wrote: | My kind of modern R&B. |
Norman Bates wrote: | So, apparently, Kate Bush gets produced by the XX and all of a sudden everybody's raving because it sounds like sexless, soulless Prince. |

Really funny especially because I dig the album. Then again, Prince would be soooo much better if he were just a little bit more sexless. Just ask what's-his-name.

I'm with Repo on this, it's my kind of modern R&B but I can see the detractors perspective too. Beneath the aura of sensual pleasure it lacks a lot of hard, tangible substance in my opinion BUT I love how the record swirls with this atmosphere. This almost biting sensuality that makes me feel like I'm floating. It's definitely a record I can't wait to spend more time with.

This is what I said in my chart:
The beauty is in the subtlety. That’s where this album shines. Tahliah Barnett’s voice doesn’t overpower you, and it doesn’t need to. Her voice, at times barely a whisper, draws you in closer to the music. The atmosphere is absolutely mesmerizing and it’s easy to just get lost in her voice and the music around her. She’s slowly pulling you in closer to her, like she has something special to tell you and only you, and you can’t help but come closer and listen.
And it still rings true to me as this album has settled with me. It feels intimate, it's close, it's subtle and beautiful. _________________ 2023 Chart

What does anything have to do with Kate Bush? What does anything ever have to do with Kate Bush? Such a lazy, incessant comparison. Kate Bush = any female artist ever, right? I get it.
I think FKA Twigs is great. Her music is always really lovely to hear and it has some neat kinda depth to it for being so cold and floaty. I find it hard to imagine anyone being like "Yeah FKA Twigs is my favourite artist, LP1 is my favourite album" but its still good. ^_^

I love this album for the first two or three plays, but the lack of substance in the songwriting really wore this one's welcome out. Fantastic production. Sexy as sex. Great craftsmanship. Look forward to future releases. Hoping Twigs is nowhere near the ceiling. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

Ok I have no idea what substance is anymore if two weeks doesn't have it. The way the composition of that song develops always blows me away. Isn't substance like the actual musical information that's in the recording?

Substance...content...depth.
I walked away feeling like the songs only work because of production. If you were to play any of the songs on a piano, guitar, etc., you'd be disappointed with how little is actually there. FKA Twigs's LP1 is a facade of something deeper.
I mean no disrespect. Despite all appearances, I still like the album, but it lost it's luster for me after listen three. I love the craftsmanship. I think Twigs has a lot of potential, but this album didn't age well in my camp. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.
