just a side-line here as I don't know the answer. I'd prefer to upload my music to the internet (in some private area) and then play/stream it from there rather than from my iPod. It gives you unlimited potential storage, allows multple devices to share the same music library, plus it will be visible from anywhere as long as I'm connected to the internet...
Does anybody know if this is possible? (I'm guessing I'd need something server-side to act as a media server)

have you tried using rhapsody?

no, I've not tried that, but don't want tie myself into a paid service. I forget to add FREE to my list of criteria, so I'll add that now

Yes, but I don't like having to mess around with itunes on what albums go on my portable device at one time. If you travelled as much as I do for work, you'd appreciate a portable library.

indeed i do. it only holds 12500 songs and i have 20000 on my computer. i would almost call it dire need haha

I have a Zune HD 
If you don't know what that is, it's microsoft's verson of the iTouch, and in my opinion it's a lot better.
