Okay, this is gonna be really hard to explain, and will probably make me sound super-duper pretentious, but hear me out on this one.

Do you guys ever listen to albums that you realize are near-perfect, instead of really liking them?

In the past few weeks, I've noticed that I've felt that way about several artists on the top 100, including:
*London Calling
*OK Computer
*Is This It?
*Funeral
*Grace

I know that this is obviously called "Best Ever Albums" and all, but it just felt weird continuing to include albums like London Calling on my chart. Yes, I know that it has hardly any filler, and is really catchy, but compared to albums like Trout Mask Replica, it's really not me. Even with an album like Funeral, which I literally gave a perfect score to, it seems silly to spend my time promoting it when everyone else here knows how great it is anyway.

So, for that reason, I decided to remove any albums in the BEA top 100 like those above from my chart. That way, I'll be able to include more obscure albums that fit my taste for psychedelia, blues, jazz, and metal more. Of course, if a BEA top 100 album aligns really well with my musical fetishes, such as the White Album or Led Zeppelin's Debut or In the Aeroplane, that's going to stay.

Does that make any sense? Is this a good idea? Discuss.

Well it does seem on the surface that you're saying you want to put obscure albums on. Which is exactally what you do say later on... so sort of with you Confused I'll have a look at the top 100 and make a bigger post soon

I think what you're saying is that it's possible to respect albums more than you actually like them and that you should only include albums that personally strike a chord with you, disregarding their reputation?

I can get behind that.

what i understood : you recognize that some albums are great but you didn't wanted to like them in the first place.

I seem to take a similar stance with my chart as you do with yours. It's easy to respect a really well-crafted album, but you have to give bigger props to the music you keep coming back to time and again. In the same vein, it would be great to be married to a porn star, but wouldn't it just be that much nicer to spend a couple decades with a nice, pretty Jewish girl?

This analogy may be lacking.

I think I get your point. Even though you recognize certain albums as definitely being great and deserving of their position, they don't always align with your favorites and pure enjoyment in listening.

I know I have certain albums a little higher than I would if I wasn't simply considering how great/influential/etc they are. For example I have Funeral in my top 15, yet if I simply ignored how "great" it's considered, it would probably fall into the 30's or 40's somewhere.

I might be way off with your point, who the hell knows. Think

I understand and agree completely. Just because something is considered by "the critics" to be one of the greatest doesn't mean you have to like it. It's okay to respect its greatness without liking it. I'm working on my chart to reflect my favorites and not necessarily what I think everyone else thinks are the best.

Be individual! Go for it! All of this is just good fun based on personal preference.

Guys, don't get me wrong; I love all those albums above. It's just that they don't fit my specific tastes, and I didn't want to waste space on my chart promoting stuff that was common knowledge to everybody already.[/i]

Oh, well that's different. I think you should say your favorites are your favorites regardless of their popularity. After all, your chart isn't really about what you're trying to "promote", it's a list of the things you love. It is for me, anyway.
