Every album The Decemberists released after this one has been so much better. While this is an alright album, it has funny looking old fashioned people on the front. Take a look at the newest album for example, super colorful Smile

Also Picaresque is great

They've had several very good albums, but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. One of the best "folk-rock" albums of the 2000's. Whenever I listen to it I somehow feel like I'm living in Civil War era America. The first 3 songs are especially well done.

One of their best - the two following it didn't work for me although I like their latest effort.

Probably the best of the Decemberists when they are focusing on their songwriting and americana roots over their progressive ambitions (which only really existed on The Hazards of Love), really stands out as their most memorable and cohesive record in it's style.

The Island is probably the proggest (proggiest?) song they've ever done.

I think for their brand of progressive ideas, everything on Hazard wins out on a "prog contest" over The Island.

Really good album, it's close between this and Picaresque for me.

Feel like this is where they balanced the charm/literary folk of their earlier material with the prog sensibilities of their later work to something beautifully cohesive, and exemplifies both "The Decemberists the hyper-literate indie folkers" and "The Decemberists the grandiose proggers" better than any album built around either of these aesthetics. Also Meloy can write like a motherfucker
