Okay, I was hoping for more of y'all to vote, but it seemed like nobody else was interested. So here are the top 50 according to a tally. The ratings were sorta skewed, so just a few more ballots would've completely changed the list, but oh well.

3. Chrono Trigger (1995)
4. Final Fantasy VI (1994)

Its already a nintendo-centric list, seems understandable that not all of em would make top 50. Those are a lot of my favorite games tho. Its funny tho, I don't think Mario 64 is as good as the other games, the rest of the main entries in the series all have better control, like the level design's openness makes it harder to build up the intuition to just know in your bones exactly how you need to jump based on what you're seeing. For me at least, and I mean it still played well and those worlds were really cool. But I think Galaxy is the better 3D game, so much of it just feels more fun to navigate for me.

Cool to see Binding of Isaac and Killer 7 up so high (although are we counting rebirth as the ultimate version of that game? Because that wasn't just an expansion, they basically just fixed everything and then made the music worse).

I love Galaxy, but what about Sunshine? I feel as if that game is often overlooked compared to the others.

I think sunshine was an improvement, probably a lot via the gamecube controller, but a lot of the open levels still felt difficult to me (but those challenge levels with the acapella music were great). I'd say I prefer Sunshine, but galaxy was where it really started to work really well, when the openness was used it still felt like there was a clear path.

Hm, this is a good point, though if I'm being honest I don't know how much I feel as if any Mario game is that open with the exception of 64. I mean sure you're not required to just select levels and play them, but I feel as if the the island, or whatever the world hub was in galaxy, was ultimately just a glorified level selector.

Oh yeah no I don't mean "open world" in that whole gta/skyrim/whatever sense. I mean in 64 it's all wide and look at how much 3d we have

and galaxy still had stuff like that but I feel like a lot of the levels were a bit more narrowly focused

Oh ok, I get what you're saying now, sorry Smile. Yeah I guess Galaxy did have pretty great level design, can't argue with that.
