Listened to Van Der Graff Generator yesterday. Haven't listened to an album I didn't at least somewhat enjoy for such a long time before yesterday. Yes is great though.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

Fragile is better, just sayin'.

Hey, you know, I'm not gonna fight that statement, because the two are really close in my opinion. They're both incredible and saying that Fragile is better, yea I can see that. Close To The Edge just slightly edges (pun not intended but gladly accepted) it out for me, but yea, I can't really vehemently disagree with you or anything.

If you're being serious, I think that album is way over-hated by most people. I wouldn't say it's better than Close To The Edge or Fragile or even Going For The One or Relayer, but it's still a good album, not the gigantic turd that everyone seems to think it is.

Yes are a ridiculous band and Tales from Topographic Oceans is the most pompous thing they ever did. That said, I take some kind of perverse enjoyment in listening to that album, which I can't say for anything else they ever did. Wakeman's wanking all over that album is incredible, just because of how silly and self-unaware it is. I went to a world music festival this summer, and whilst there I went to a gong bath, which was run by this old hippie who called himself Bear Love. He basically just banged a variety of gongs and fucked around with wind chimes for an hour in this massive tent, and there were massive pillows everywhere and you just lay down and let the gongs wash over you. At the beginning, he gave an introduction where he explained the spiritual healing powers of the gongs. It took everything in my power not to laugh in his face - it was perhaps the stupidest thing I've ever listened to. However, after about five minutes of the gongs, I let go of my inhibitions and had an amazing time. It completely cured my hangover, and I couldn't wipe the smile from my face for the rest of the day. That is what Tales from Topographic Oceans is like.

Yea, I mean, I'm not gonna pretend like Yes in general isn't a little over-the-top sometimes, and Tales From Topographic Oceans is them at their most ridiculous. I mean, the thing is based on four classes of Hindu scripture, so yea, it's a little ridiculous, it's a perfect example of how deeply weaved into faux intelligentsia Yes got. Still though, I think the music ends up being pretty good, despite all of that.

Ahhhhhh I can't agree with that.

So much great stuff on Fragile, and the great stuff is indeed GREAT.. but the little stuff in between the epics brings the album down a bit in my opinion. I love Fragile but Close to the Edge to me is one of the purest listening experiences ever when it comes to an album. Maybe the greatest prog rock album ever with Crimson King and Selling England.
