Very evocative. Amazing. How can so much come out of so little?

I still remember when I first heard this album in mid-2009. I had just fallen deeply in love with Tori Amos, and was just discovering Kate Bush as well. This was considered by many to be the greatest female singer-songwriter album of all time, and well.....
It sorta sucked.
(Please don't cry, DBZ)
Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, but all the good things here have been duplicated by all the other female singer-songwriters, and every time I've listened to this over the past half-decade, I've been really underwhelmed. Even compared to the superior Tapestry from that year, these guitar ballads seem anemic and bland. It's got some good singles near the end, though, particularly "California".
(Hissing of Summer Lawns is pretty good, though, and her masterpiece is Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

That's what I think couple hours after eating focaccia sandwich. _________________ "I feel like for the last two years there’s been sort of a sonic evolution happening and I’ve been experimenting more and more."

I feel like JMan when I listen to Joni. I have oodles of respect for her music and want to rate it highly, but I just don't enjoy myself that much.

As a parent, "Little Green" makes me tear up a little just about every time.
"Child with a child pretending
Weary of lies you're sending home
So you sign all the papers in the family name
You're sad and you're sorry but you're not ashamed
Little green, have a happy ending"
Knowing that it's about the daughter that Joni Mitchell gave up, that whole section is heartbreaking, I can only imagine how difficult it would be to give up a child, and I can't even imagine what was going through Mitchell's mind at the time. It's really a beautiful song.
As for the rest of the album, it's an absolutely masterwork in songwriting, it's Joni's best in my opinion. It just has this honest, personal feel to it, it feels like it's coming straight from Joni to you, all written in beautiful prose. _________________ 2023 Chart

Simply amazing. I just re-did my 70s chart; it's at #2. I've always liked it a whole lot, but during a drunken binge back in January after a rough breakup I dusted off the vinyl and it played like I'd never heard it before. I guess you gotta feel worse before you can feel better, so I cried my eyes out. An absolute masterpiece. Without a doubt in my mind the greatest album from any female artist ever (barring VU&N which doesn't really count).
