Hey BEA. So as you may have inferred from the thread title I'm looking to (at some point in the eventual future) get some people to participate in a BEA ranking of our favorite books. Not gonna get it rolling until after the current film poll craze settles down a bit, but I thought we could still start discussing how we might go about such a tournament. How long should lists be? What is considered eligible? Are poetry anthologies game? What about photography and visual art books? Hypertext fiction? Basically just use this thread to help me work out the specifics of what (I hope) will one day be the Best Ever Books vote/poll, (and I suppose also if you want you can drop some names here if you wanna get some books more well-known within the BEA community).
tl;dr Favorite books poll! yes? no? Discuss!
EDIT: looks like we have a more support leaning towards it being purely a fiction poll. How does everyone feel about this?

I assumed that was what "Humorous Third Option" was.

i vote yes but have a hard time articulating what i would want to see as far as books go. might wanna separate into at least fiction and nonfiction but maybe more subjects, 'cause i read lots of anthro and poly/econ theory, MuslimBigfoot reads lots of philosophy, bongritsu reads lots of scat pornography periodicals and fascist manifestos. might need to separate things out.

though yeah I do see what you mean, though I'm just not sure there would be enough participation to really divide it into that many categories

i was thinking "general non-fiction/non-poetry anthologies" / "philosophy/poetry" / "novels/comics/'art' books"
though that brings up the issue that a decent amount of philosophy is incredibly dry and non-lyrical, and lots of non-poetry anthologies are much more about the form of the language rather than the content...
welp, glad i'm not running the tournament

Gaeeeebbbbbeeee, iff we love a nonfiction book ironically, should we put it under fic- [gunshot]
This sounds great. My current Goodreads "Favorite Books" list includes fiction, nonfiction and poetry, so I'll be happy with any combination of those formats.
Also, here's my favorite books list if any of you guys want to see. Would love to see your lists too if anyone wants to show their cards early.

I'm guessing people would be more interested in a fiction tourney, but if we end up doing a non-fiction tourney I will make sure to judge works according to purely aesthetic criteria. For real though, non-fiction would be a weird thing to judge. I can easily see it turning into a "list of subjects I'm interested in" thing. (Also, do philosophical works fall under the "descriptions of reality" category or the "things that my brain came up with" category?)
Including interactive fiction could be problematic, since there's such a murky distinction between literary and gameplay-focused works. For the sake of simplicity it might be easiest to limit the tourney to works that have been physically published. (Not for any ideological reason, just seems practical. "Art is the frame", etc.)
