Too early for this? Absolutely, but the Oscars (and related film awards season) is basically my Christmas, so I feel justified.
Anyway, just putting this out there for general discussion on the impending awards season, plus predictions or whatnot for the 88th Academy Awards ceremony.
A handful of ill-informed predictions based off available knowledge:
Key & Peele hosting (as the new producers worked for BET and have confirmed dual hosts)
Best Picture (ranked by likelihood):
1. Spotlight
2. Bridge of Spies
3. Steve Jobs
4. Room
5. The Martian (would never have believed it three months ago)
6. Inside Out
7. Black Mass
Also expecting good things from The Revenant, Joy, and The Big Short, but will hold off judgment until more is known about those.
Best Director:
1. Thomas McCarthy, Spotlight
2. Steve Spielberg, Bridge of Spies
3. Danny Boyle, Steve Jobs
4. George Miller, Mad Max Fury Road (no Picture nom, but hopefully Director)
5. Ridley Scott, The Martian (a bit optimistic for two SF blockbusters in one year, but we'll see)
Best Actor:
1. Johnny Depp
2. Michael Fassbender
3. Tom Hanks
4. Bryan Cranston
5. Michael Caine
Best Actress:
1. Brie Larson
2. Cate Blanchett
3. Emily Blunt
4. Lily Tomlin
5. Carey Mulligan/Saoirse Ronan (tie)
Best Supporting Actor
1. Idris Elba
2. Michael Keaton
3. Mark Rylance
4. Paul Dano
5. Jacob Tremblay
Best Supporting Actress:
1. Kate Winslet
2. Rooney Mara
3. Jane Fonda
4. Rachel McAdams
5. Jennifer Jason Leigh
Best Original Screenplay:
1. Spotlight
2. Bridge of Spies
3. Inside Out
4. The Hateful Eight
5. Suffragette
Best Adapted Screenplay:
1. Steve Jobs
2. Room
3. The Martian
4. Beasts of No Nation
5. Brooklyn
Best Animated Feature:
1. Inside Out
2. Anamolisa
3. Shaun the Sheep
Best Foreign Language Film
1. Son of Saul
2. A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence
3. Lamb
4. The Assassin
5. Utopia
Will definitely be updating as more news comes.

How good is Spotlight? Has anyone seen it? I'm not a fan of Ruffalo, and I despise Rachel McAdams... Plus, the directors last 2 films were pitiful. Is it really a front runner?

I've always been confused about this category. What makes these 3 films 'original screenplays', when they're all adapted from real life events? Especially since you put 'Steve Jobs' in adapted. _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!

I personally haven't, but 97%on Rotten Tomatoes and 81/100 on Metacritic convinced me. Plus it played at Venice, Toronto, and Telluride Film Festivals. 1st place may be overdoing it admittedly, but I feel confident in a nomination at least.

It only counts as adapted if it was adapted from a specific published work (I think) meaning that something based off real life wouldn't count. Of course, I'm not 100% on any of these and theybreally could go anywhere, who knows.
(Case in point: Whiplash getting an "Adapted" screenplay nomination when most others called it "Original")

Trust me, I try to support Canadian actors as much as I can, but I just don't understand why people like her... she truly can't act. The only thing I've seen her do remotely well in is About Time. I think her performance in Midnight in Paris actually degrades the movie
Plus, with her multiple performance cluttering her time this year (Aloha, Everything Will Be Fine, True Detective, Southpaw), I can't see how she'd have time to pull together a strong performance for Spotlight. I dunno, maybe she did, I haven't seen it... but I'm really just not a fan of her. _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!

The better question is, will Spotlight be Tom Mccarthy's best movie of 2015, or will it fail to measure up to the genius of The Cobbler (which is still one of my top five favorite movies of the year, no joke).

That was silly last year... Whiplash should of been eligible. The soundtrack not being eligible for it's respective category was also silly.
In recent years films like The King's Speech, Zero Dark Thirty, Dallas Buyer's Club and The Queen have all been allowed in the 'Best Original Screenplay' category, but Captain Phillips, The Theory of Everything, Lincoln, The Social Network and 127 Hours have been considered 'adapted'... I'm sure I'm just missing a piece of information on why, but the line between the two seems to mesh. _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!
