this is perhaps the greatest hidden gem i've unearthed. everything about this album is magical. the atmosphere. the vocals. the songwriting. even the song titles bait the mystery. such a great balance of songwriting and experimentation here. perfection. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

when brutal honesty shares its light without dwelling too heavily on cynicism. there's a refreshing sense of optimism on this rather pleasant record. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

gary lucas clearly loves these songs, and his dedication to representing them with accuracy reflects this, and he delivers exactly what he promised, no more and no less: old chinese pop songs reinterpreted on guitar. it’s really cool. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

---------------------
--- BLOODLINES ---
---------------------
jeff and tim never had a close relationship, meeting only once in their short lifetimes, but some of their best works centered around each other.
jeff buckley: what will you say?
tim buckley: i never asked to be your mountain
tim buckley: dream letter
jeff buckley: dream brother
the stories of these two are tragedy on top of tragedy. tim buckley's father beat him. jeff buckley's father deserted him. and they both died way too young...
† tim buckley - 28 yr
† jeff buckley - 30 yr
-------------------------------
--- FRAZER CONNECTION ---
-------------------------------
it's interesting how closely entwined liz fraser got herself involved with the buckleys. she was a huge fan of tim buckley's music and famously covered his song to the siren in the 1980s.
tim buckley: song to the siren
this mortal coil: song to the siren
a young jeff buckley wrote her fanmail thanking her for her stunning cover. later, as jeff buckley began to establish himself as a musician, liz fraser admitted in an interview that she was a big fan of jeff's. shortly after, the two met and had a bit of a whirlwind romance, resulting in a brief collaboration and a handful of songs directed at each other.
liz fraser & jeff buckley: all flowers in time bend towards the sun
cocteau twins: rilkean heart
jeff buckley: thousand fold
jeff buckley: morning theft
massive attack: teardrop
according to legend, liz fraser was in the studio recording teardrop the day jeff buckley died. she has dabbled in musical projects on and off since then, but she mostly stepped away from the music scene after jeff's demise.
------------------
--- QAWWALI ---
------------------
jeff buckley called nusrat fateh ali khan his elvis and reportedly owned over a hundred cassette tapes of qawwali music, studying nusrat's music religiously and learning the punjabi lyrics to a few of his compositions, including his famous sin-e performance.
nusrat fateh ali khan: yeh jo halka halka suroor hai
jeff buckley: yeh jo halka halka suroor hai
he eventually had the opportunity to interview nusrat fateh ali khan, and the two became friends. a book published around the time of their deaths interviewed both of them extensively about music and spirituality. they died just a few months apart.
† nusrat fateth ali khan - august 16, 1997
† jeff buckley - may 29, 1997
--------------------------
--- MISCELLANEOUS ---
--------------------------
there are other connections that probably aren't so strange considering the industry, but tim buckley was friends with leonard cohen (hallelujah) and gary lucas (captain beefheart guitarist who co-wrote mojo pin and grace). _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

That legend is essentially true, though (according to this article in the Guardian) she didn't find out he'd actually died until several days later when they discovered his body — during the session(s) in question she was only told that he'd "disappeared." Incidentally, that's also when she met Massive Attack's drummer, Damon Reece, whom she's been with ever since. The two of them actually released a new EP a couple of months ago under the name "Sun's Signature," which you can hear/buy on Bandcamp — it's really good, though it helps if you like songs that have quiet, new-agey intro sections lasting upwards of 90 seconds each. Also, she hasn't lost her appreciation for bluebirds, if the lyrics are any indication, and yes, the scary-looking front cover is totally inappropriate for the music contained within.

triumvirate of golden voices circa early to mid twentieth century:
eleanora fagan (billie holiday)
su pu / wang xiaohong / zhou xiaohong (zhou xuan)
edith giovanna gassion (edith piaf)
every single one of these stars overcame major adversity. be it racism, cultural oppression, poverty, child prostitution (terrible descriptor; see: statutory rape), or being sold by their own family to feed an opium addiction (su pu), it amazes me to no end what these women accomplished, inspiring hundreds of millions of people all around the globe over their brief lives. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.
