Thanks AfterHours, interesting how you have Kind of Blue as a 6 and then Astral Weeks and Velvet Underground as a 6.5. I found Astral Weeks to be an amazing album even on a first listen and Velvet Underground and Nico the same, but I have trouble with jazz, particularly the more abstract types of jazz. It's funny because I really do enjoy watching jazz played live, but give me a CD and it's totally lost on me.

I'll definitely give some of these albums a try, particularly Rock Bottom, and give me enough time and I'll also have a go at the rest of your list.

Understood. If you can master the sounds of Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme, Shape of Jazz To Come and Free Jazz, you are unlikely to have much of any trouble with jazz after that.

Kind of Blue could just as easily be a 6.5, which I've had it at before and will consider moving when I take my next trip through the list in that order.

are you sure? ;)

Well I can't say I'm sure about that because I wasn't there hehe, but in different interviews both Zappa and Van Vliet said separately that they never took any drugs, and if they caught someone of the band taking any drug, the fired them. Now, I've heard that some of the band members of Captain Beefheart denied that, but I believe it was to bother Van Vliet more than anything.

I think the best way to get introduced to jazz, are by Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme, and they will forcely take you to other artists and albums.

In my opinion, there are more than 40 masterpieces made in Jazz only. So my list is bigger than Afterhours, but as said before it's a matter of tastes.
Here are some essential jazz recordings:

Abdullah Ibrahim - Water From an Ancient Well
Albert Ayler - Spritual Unity
Andrew Hill - Point of Departure
Art Blakey - The Big Beat
Art Blakey - with Thelonious Monk
Art Tatum - Classic Early Solos (1934-1937)
Art Tatum - 1932-1934
Art Tatum - I Got Rhythm: Vol. 3 (1935-1944)
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
Bill Evans - Sunday at the Village Vanguard
Bud Powell - The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1 & 2
Charles Mingus – Pithecantrupus Erectus
Charles Mingus – Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Charles Mingus - A Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Charlie "Bird" Parker - The Quintet: Live at Massey Hall
Charlie "Bird" Parker - Complete Savoy & Dial Recordings
Dizzy Gillespie - Complete RCA Victor Recordings
Duke Ellington - Ellington at Newport
Duke Ellington - The Duke at Fargo 1940
Duke Ellington - And His Mother Called Him Bill
Duke Ellington - The Far East Suite
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles
Horace Silver - Song For My Father
Horace Silver - Blowin' The Blues Away
Jackie McLean - One Step Beyond
Jackie McLean - Let Freedom Ring
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
John Coltrane - Interstellar Space
John Coltrane - Coltrane's Sound
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
John Coltrane - Ascension
Louis Armstrong - Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Miles Davis - Miles Smiles
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Miles Davis - Jack Johnson
Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth
Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come
Rahsaan Roland Kirk - The Inflated Tear
Sonny "Newk" Rollins - a Night at the Village Vanguard
Sonny "Newk" Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Sonny "Newk" Rollins - Newk's Time
Thelonious Monk - Genius of Modern Music, Vol 1 & 2
Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Music
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream
Wayne Shorter - JuJu
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil

I'm trying to avoid Free Jazz/Avant-Garde the more possible here.

Thanks guys, really nice of you to help. I've own a copy of Kind of Blue and I like it but I guess I don't appreciate it as much as I should do. When I'm in the mood for more classical type of music, I prefer to listen to flamenco or flamenco fusion. I'm going to get hold of some of the John Coltrane albums as by the sounds of things, you guys really rate him.

Frank Zappa is notorious for being against the use of drugs (though I've rarely seen an interview in which he wasn't smoking a cigarette). I haven't heard about Beehheart's. I listened to Trout Mask Replica last night while going for a walk. It was my 3rd times listening and I finally "got" it for almost the first half, ya'll were right, it's an amazing album.
