from what little I heard (my internet crapped out and I went to bed about 10 minutes in) it certainly was very lowkey, decidedly not lowkey however is his 1965 album which is well worth a listen

The Sidewinder by Lee Morgan
This is one of the slickest jazz albums I've heard. I really like some of the intricacies that each player puts into their respective instruments - especially Morgan's urgent staccatos at one point, it's glorious. Tracks are all swinging, passionate, full of life and it makes me happy.

Destination Out! by Jackie McLean
This album stood out to me in a very special way. Firstly, that vibraphone has a very rich texture to it; I thought the instrument was an exclusive for stuff like jazz-fusion, but apparently I was wrong, and I'm glad I'm wrong because it complements the album perfectly. I also love the sparseness and mellowness of it, even with the erratic beat of the drums at some points, you still get loads of time to breathe and take in the feel of the album. The tracks I really enjoyed the most were the ones penned by Granchan Moncur III (I should check out more of his stuff). The album reaches a bit of a stump when McLean's track starts playing, it's a bit long and a bit too busy. Apart from that, I'm really digging this.

Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud by Miles Davis
I've been having moments throughout the last couple of days where I've just been so disheartened that I just think, what's the point anymore? This is one of those moments, and no albums I've attempted seems to be helping me. I need something that's short and sweet but also familiar, and that's when I thought, why not put on some Miles Davis. I haven't seen the film this score is accompanying, let alone have even heard this album before, but I just wanted something comforting, is that too much to ask?
It was OK; it was serviceable, I guess. I'm still a bit bitter, but hopefully I'll feel better someday.

Africa/Brass by John Coltrane Quartet
This album is just on point throughout the 33 minutes it has time to shine. It builds from where My Favourite Things left off so wonderfully but amps up the brass to make it bombastic - especially in the two original pieces. There is never a dull moment here and each musician work off each other so well that their chemistry would put covalent bonds to shame (terrible pun, I'm sorry). The only thing I would complain about is that I wish there were MORE of this, well I should've expected this to be the case because of the length, but if I had known that Africa/Brass was going to be this good, I would've liked it to be longer. But yeah, this album is awesome and it's one of the reasons why I love jazz so much.

The First Time Listen-a-longs (Part 2)
Had to make a part two to this because I don't want to keep on adding to the other post when there's so many albums I have not heard from the schedule. Previous albums are here.

Naked City by John Zorn
I'm perplexed by this. What even is this?! It can never decide whether it wants to be chaotic and spastic or atmospheric and chilled. It's pretty cool in places, but in others I just wonder what the hell is up with this sometimes.

Out There by Eric Dolphy
I really loved Out To Lunch!, so I was excited to hear this. I can't tell if Out There was safer or stranger than what was to come. The cello often gave it a warped feeling while Dolpy's playing seems aimless. This is still pretty good, regardless.

I don't think I can do Nothing But Jazz July anymore, and, to be frank, I don't think anybody else in that group can do it either. It was fun while it lasted, but people were either just too busy to participate in listen-a-longs, or that some lacked motivation to do so. Both of those factors seemed to rub off on me, plus the fact that I'm kind of tired to listening to jazz at this point. Not that I'll stop listening to jazz forever - I'll still love jazz with all my heart - but I need to take a break from it for a while to explore other albums I really want to listen to. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't listen to all the jazz albums I wanted to cover for this month, but I think there will be more opportunities for me to do that in the future. _________________
