Man, this is way more work than I originally thought.

I just finished the top 100 albums on this site though for the 1960s and rated each one of them... I just couldn't write my impressions for each one (time/laziness/easier to just keep track of it on my spreadsheet and on the site and adding this process was just another step and while at work/driving etc, makes it difficult to keep up).

Progress so far... I wanted to write a review of each album, but found with my schedule I'm going to rate it all first and then hopefully get back to the review. I found my reviews were just personal ideas that came to mind when I listened to it and not really a review... and who really cares about my opinion.

It did help me articulate why I like something, so it's really helpful, I just need to not be so lazy.

Having said that I'm being lazy, I've listened to 147 albums in the past few weeks.

Kinda finishing this up... I didn't "diary" much, but did find this interesting/learned something new:

Soo random thought:

Two artists I didn't really care for, but now maybe respect a little more listening to their 60s debut.

Bee Gees (not disco, but hippy dippy stuff similar to later Beatles, but not as good)

1st by Bee Gees

Fleetwood Mac (Not sure how to describe what they are famous for, but this album is some raw blues rock... not terribly unique blues rock, but really good guitar tone at least.

Fleetwood Mac by Fleetwood Mac

They sound nothing like what they are famous for and show that they are able to do other music than just their restricted genre or they can only do one thing kinda thing... one thing GOOD maybe a different argument, but it's not like this is kill me now terrible either... just average.

Any after thoughts ? I mean, considering the substantial amount of effort you've put into it, did it overall make you re-evaluate the 1960s era, or rather re-confirm what you'd already known before ?

Yeah, totally. Thanks for asking.

It kinda has been a grueling task. I've listened to almost 200 records from the era.

I think some prejudices I had before have totally changed.

Like I totally think Roy Orbison is an amazing songwriter... before I thought he was way better than he really was though because I really only listened to his hits. His albums are pretty bland. I was expecting to be blown away, because his singles do blow me away. I mean I still respect his music... just not as much as I did before. Donovan is another artist I really respected, but realize I only really dig his hits.

One artist I only dug hits from was CCR, but listened to 4 of their albums for the first time all the way through and found they are much better songwriters I originally gave them credit for... same with Steve Miller Band. They actually write pretty solid albums.

It did solidify, for at least me, and my opinion, that the Beatles really did make great records. The overall quality, recording, studio work, etc. really is superb in my opinion. I compare that to a lot of Garage Rock, and some groups I really wish they had invested a little more into better mixes at least. For example The Sonics were a pretty rad/energetic group, but their bass was barely audible... yet it had rad bass lines (in otherwords their live performance probably had a totally different feel

It also solidified for me that The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan still is my favorite ALBUM. There's better SONGS on his higher ranking albums, but as an album as a whole, I love EVERY track off of The Times They Are A-Changin'.

I also forgot how amazing The Doors were. I mean I grew up on their music (hits), but I'm ranking them much higher this time around.

I still don't know what to do about one hit wonder type things. Like The Meters... Cissy Strut is one of the coolest songs ever written and they might make the end of my chart for their album, but I can't say in good conscience say their album keeps that good of a flow throughout. I kinda wish I could do favorite songs of the 60s to help resent some of those one hit wonders that wrote really good tunes, they just weren't terribly consistent.

I also experienced the first cover of a Bob Dylan song I didn't like better than the Bob Dylan original with Joe Cocker's version of Just Like A Woman... Bob Dylan's performance is WAY better. I had this prejudice before that Bob Dylan is one of the greatest songwriters of our time, but not performers.

I also now get a little why Satie, dare I say, hates rock music. I got really bored with how many blues rock bands there were. Fleetwood Mac for example had some really good guitar tone, etc. on their debut, yet I was so bored with blues rock by this time that I was just over it. But I still love Led Zeppelin/Rolling Stones.

It was also interesting to see certain artists bleed over to the 60s that were better/still good like Johnny Cash (he makes good albums), and then others like Elvis that just didn't do so well.

I also learned that I really don't like Deep Purple. I remember people talking about them and they were usually the "rockers" and now I get why. It just seems like music written for people with lower IQs... sorry if that's rude, but that's how I felt.

I also loved Otis Redding's hits, but didn't know his story that well. His association with Booker T and the fact he died 3 days after recording Dock of the Bay. I also realized that although he did decent covers... when he was part of the songwriting... man are those great records. It inspired me to want to write music that had as much feeling as he did.

Any that's a few of the many things I learned this time around.

Are you considering engaging with the jazz of the '60s? I know you constantly state it as the prevailing genre of the '50s, but I think most people see the '60s as a huge high point of jazz music. I would argue that there was more consistent and diverse jazz ouput and innovation in the '60s than virtually any other period in its history. I think any overview of the '60s is incomplete (like, not 90% complete but like 30% complete) without jazz music being a huge part of the investigation.

Still, admirable effort and glad you could re-assess a lot of your longstanding opinions about the era!
