So... I play bass, and find that even before I started playing bass, my musical tastes often have good bass to it.

Basically this thread will be share anything bass related.

Favorite bass sounds (electronic, upright bass, bass guitar, etc), bass players, bass gear, the role it plays or doesn't play in music, etc.

Open discussion, ideas shared, etc. welcome.

To start it off I thought this was funny/instructional:

The bass is the unsung driving force, the rhythmic analog to prepaid postage. Throbbing and prismatic, it will reach to your primal core and thunder like a rutting bull moose. Be wary of cutting trees in proverbial forests where such beasts roam.

One of my favorite rock bass players. Graham Maby is not well known, but he's been in Joe Jackson's back pocket since day one, and has played on pretty much everything he's ever done. He's also played a lot with They Might Be Giants, as well as Natalie Merchant, Freedy Johnston, Marshall Crenshaw, and a lot more.

5 great basslines, off the top of my head:

1. The Clash Guns of Brixton
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiQoq-wqZxg

2. The Cure Other Voices
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TNc-mRwyP4

3. Metallica For Whom The Bell Tolls
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdlQyNe_9tE

4. The Stone Roses I Wanna Be Adored
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D2qcbu26gs

5. Fat Freddy's Drop Blackbird - @noWaxJim, I guess you're familiar with this one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXSt2q1pfXM

And the award for lifetime achievement goes to Peter Hook. Impossible to pick only one outstanding bassline from him.

Question: would you guys agree that bass guitar only rose to prominence with the rise of post-punk (Joy Division, The Cure, Bauhaus, etc.), preceded and inspired by funk, krautrock acts such as Neu or Can and Jamaican reggae/dub culture ? Or am I missing something about the timeline ?

Apart from Rain or Tomorrow Never Knows, can you point out other bass-centered acts/albums/tracks pre-1970 ?

Will contribute later, but for now let's be smart about how many YouTube videos we put on a page. I suggest the url function.
