As far as an educated guess can go? Probably around the time alternative rock became “adult contemporary” by the mainstream labels and press. When bands like Vertical Horizon, Tonic, Everclear, and others became what the public perceived as that label was probably the beginning of the schism if I had to guess. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind any of the three I mentioned, but it is an observation and theory. I would say the rise of Post-Grunge with the release of Bush’s first album could be a good theoretical point as well. Basically I’m saying it was somewhere in the mid-90s when this happened rather than the 00s.
Perhaps then its meaning just changed to feature greater irony.

I guess my sense of time sucks. I thought 3 doors down and Better than Ezra and all those crap bands that were labeled as such were all around the same time.
I think we agree completely then. I just suck at history.
I'm not sure actually if this is totally uncontroversial, but...
This decade has been hodgepodge overall. I've kinda not been too impressed most years of it thus far. BUT. When the good stuff has come out this decade... it's proven to be some of the best of all time. I have three top 20 all-time albums which have come out in 2010 or later (my list needs to be updated to reflect such).

I have yet to really fall in love with anything past 2010... but I haven't really "tried" either.
I kind of feel like music has become like the new grey and beige in style... kind of bland... but that's not quite the right word either.
Again... I totally have only heard like 100 albums past 2010.
The frog can only understand the preacher when he speaks in tongues.
Actually sometimes I appreciate the simple responses you've given, but yes, I agree, lately they have been totally nonsensical and not really communicating anything
