This is pretty much the epitome of the type of album I really enjoy - a scattershot collection of songs with some real high points and noticeable (but not awful) low points. There are some genuinely beautiful songs here - Papa Was a Rodeo, Meaningless, You're My Only Home, Acoustic Guitar, I Don't Believe In the Sun. I could probably name about 40 amazing tracks on this. There are some bad songs as well, but they're so short they don't drag the album down at all. And the subject matter lives in a weird place between sarcasm and sincerity that makes it even more enjoyable.
Also great for road trips - I lived about three hours away from where I went to school, so drives up and back were always reserved for playing this thing in full. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.

I've always thought it would be interesting to hear someone make a covers album of some of the highlights from this album - lots of great songs, but sometimes it's hard to sit through the whole thing.

There's a covers album of Minnesota artists doing the whole album- so not quite what you're after but it's still pretty interesting.
Anyway, this is one of my favourite albums. I always listen to the whole thing one way or another- usually over a couple of days, though. I find there's new highlights each time. I always thought the first disc was the best, but on last listen I really dug the second disk! It's got Crazy for You (But Not That Crazy), Papa Was A Rodeo, Abigail Belle of Kilronan, the masterpiece that is I Shatter. Even songs like Love is Like Jazz are pretty fun. It's the sort of album where even the low points are entertaining, and the high points are really high- kind of like The White Album.

The first time I heard this I couldn't believe anyone liked it. But I couldn't stay away from it. Strangely addicting. I love it.

Great collection, very creative and original.
So much on here that makes you want to come back.
I'm also curious about his follow up album for this: 50 autobiografical songs.
