First and last three songs are good. The rest is a bit of a slog.

I'm glad that you've included "Exit" in your list of good songs. That track is so damn underrated.

I love U2 and this album! Bono's vocals soar over the beautiful atmosphere. Highly recommed you check out this album if you're a fan of emotive rock. One of my favorite old bands

I really think this album gets way too much hate on this site. I've known I Still Haven't Heard What I'm Looking For and With Or Without you from the radio for forever, and I'd always just assumed that they were from the late 90s or early 2000s; my mind was blown a year or two ago when I listened to the full album and found out they came out in 1987. Personally, I find those twho tracks to be some of the worst on the album, but that's probably just due to overexposure. My favourites are Where The Streets Have No Name (which I to this day have, somehow, never heard played on any radio station), Running To Stand Still, Red Hill Mining Town, and Exit... really I like all of them except for those two singles. I think the main reason it's so hated is just that it was overplayed.

It may not appear in Canadian radios but, trust me, it does quite a lot in Spanish radios, as much as the two you mentioned before you were overexposed.
Having said that, I'll take in account what you and others have said here and give a chance to the album. The songs I know from it are quite good but also tiring because of the overplay.

it's a great album. the lead singles are (exception for streets) not even close to the best on the album, imho. i'd rank the tracks as follows:

Where The Streets Have No Name
Red Hill Mining Town
Running To Stand Still
Bullet The Blue Sky
One Tree Hill
With Or Without You
Exit
Mothers Of The Disappeared
In God's Country
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Trip Through Your Wires

this was my jam in middle school. u2 were in my mind the best band on the planet. years have passed. i went through a phase of X years where i didn't listen to them at all and didn't particularly like them. burnt out. sick of bono's bonoism. etc. came back to their old music recently and damn wow. they're certainly a tad overrated, but they really are were a great band, and this really is a fantastic album. if you can pull off one of those 'forget it's u2 and just listen to the music'.

It's a very good album IMO -wouldn't say excellent though-.
As opposed from previous users I do find the singles to be the best tracks (along with bullet and running an IGC).
I've been listening to those songs since they came out and they still sound good. At that moment The Edge's sound/arreangements where pretty fresh and new for a top seller band -you know, number one hits almost without cymbals and a lot of highs from the guitar overtones; that was new for the regular mtv/radio listener-.

In the 90s they changed and did a couple of good albums and The Edge again did put out some hugely influential guitar stuff but the messianic Bono figure went over the top and maybe killed their appeal for a true music lover.

8/10 in my book.

It's very solid. I'm burnt out on the first three songs, but still enjoy the album as a whole.
