I've noticed that some of the emoticons are not working.

None of the emoticons move in ie9, they do in firefox 4. Actually none of the gifs move either in ie9

that's strange, I've just had a check on IE9 and the smilies that have animations seem to be working for me e.g. head bashing against a wall (not all of the smilies contain animations)

Not for me in ie9 but they do in firefox 4. Perhaps it's a local setting but I accept the defaults.

just Googled this, so it might not work for you, but have you tried this setting (requires a browser restart afterwards):

Tools-Internet Options-Advanced-Multimedia-"Play animations in webpages"

That did it! Not only are you a great webmaster but a great IT specialist too!

Hard to understand why Microsoft makes some of it default choices. With ie9 they were looking for improved performance/speed apparently at the expense of tools.
