Yeah, SmogBill Callahan is on Drag City so he's not on any streaming service which probably hinders his popularity A LOT nowadays. But, he's easily one pf the best singer-songwriters since the 90s. All his albums are pretty consistently great, but check out...

Also, every single Teenage Fanclub album is a total power pop treasure and GROWERS and they have about ten albums.

One out of left field. The Church. No less than 15 of their studio albums since the eighties have received 4 stars or better at Allmusic. I'd defy anyone to come up with an act and particulary a band that tops that. A pity that besides Starfish their catalogue so expensive and hard to get hold of because their music's amazing.

Evan Parker and no one I know comes close to sheer numbers of acclaimed albums.
To the previous poster, 57 4+ star albums since '72, 21 of which are 4.5, and allmusic has much less than a sixth of his discography. And then none of that previous sentence includes any recordings where he's not leader or the group plays under a moniker. The man has had as many legendary lineups as Miles Davis and at this point has been active longer than he was, and has always been significantly more prolific. There's a world going on underground, y'all

That is amazing about The Church. Unfortunately, almost all of my favorite artists are the kind who started off with 3 or 4 classic great albums in a row, and ,then there was a really abrupt, sudden huge decline in quality from which they never recovered. I dont know why all my favorites seem to be, that way. Either that type of artist, or else, they're the kind who only made a few albums altogether. Then disappeared.

Neil Young
Bob Dylan
Willie Nelson
John Lee Hooker
Van Morrison
Springsteen
I'd probably pick Neil off this list, but there's no wrong choice
