Who can come up with a longer - or better chain? Meaning you start with an artist, then comes another artist covering first artists song, then a third... Maybe there is even a chain going full circle? Obviously the songs should be well known. But this probably goes without saying. (I had to google the last entry).
Marvelettes - Please Mr. Postman
Beatles - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
Elton John - Rocket Man
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
Placebo - The Bitter End

Frank Sinatra - When Your Lover Has Gone
Ray Charles - What I'd Say
Elvis Presley - Hound Dog
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
Bob Dylan - If Not For You
George Harrison - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
The Beatles - Please Mr. Postman
The Marvelettes - Way Over There
The Miracles - I Second That Emotion
The Supremes - I Want A Guy
The Marvelettes - Please Mr. Postman
The Beatles - Twist And Shout
The Isley Brothers - It's Our Thing
The Temptations - Ain't Too Proud To Beg
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up (THAT'S RIGHT, I ALREADY WON!)
True, I used the same song twice, true I used the same band twice, but I never used the same song/band combo (if I did I could have made a loop like you wondered about). Granted, a lot of songs I used weren't written by the artist, but a version was done by that artist. So using staples with lots of versions made this easy. I could have kept going but upon finding a rick astley version of "ain't to proud to beg" there was no going back.

this doesn't exactly play by the rules as i understand them, but my favorite chain / web of artists goes something like:
tim buckley - song to siren
liz fraser (w/ mortal coil) - song to siren
jeff buckley - ivo (cocteau twins)
this is stuff of legend. jeff first heard liz's music through her cover of his absent father's most famous piece of music. they fell in love, and he and liz ended up recording all flowers in time together. they had a falling out, and they wrote some gorgeous pieces of music about each other, namely:
- rilkean heart (ef)
- morning theft (jb)
- teardrops (ef)
teardrops was recorded on the day jb died, and elizabeth fraser has hardly done anything since. there's something greek mythologist about the whole series... and others have written quite a bit about it. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

Apparently the Marvelettes covered Supremes’s "A Breathtaking Guy", which adds one piece to the chain. (Sorry for any disappointments.) _________________ When the stewardess is near do not show any fear.
