Inspired by the artists whose debut is the best thread. I wrote their that most artists have either the best debut or reach their peak around their 3rd or 4th album.

So lets reverse the question, which artists released their best albums after they already released 5 (or more)? I think there will be a fewer answers here than in the thread about debuts.

That is so true about most people making their best album at about their third or 4th album. also I found that most of my favorite artists' only excellent albums were their first to fifth album and then they never really made an excellent album again.I don't know if that's unique to me, but it seems to happen over and over again to me. my favorite artists have a great streak of about four or five albums and then suddenly it's all over. But heres a few I can think of who made the best album after the 5th one

Joni Mitchell
David Bowie
Bob Dylan
Beach Boys
Beatles
Aretha Franklin
Fleetwood Mac

very few.......

Sonic Youth, obviously.

you could probably argue The Church. i take this one back. first five are stellar, though their best do mostly come after.

can't think of any others.....

I'd imagine quite a few people would say the Cure with Disintegration and U2 with The Joshua Tree. I don't know enough of their discography to be sure but Swans have been going for years so they could be a contender.

I think Call Me by Al Green is his best album which I think was his 6th album.
Marvin Gaye is an obvious choice with What's Going On.
Exodus by Bob Marley & The Wailers is probably his most popular
Aretha Franklin
James Brown
or how about Cat Power?

Top 10 examples:

Charles Mingus (Black Saint and the Sinner Lady)
John Coltrane (A Love Supreme)
Cecil Taylor (Unit Structures)
Carla Bley (Escalator Over the Hill) <-- arguable because she was either a collaborator or main composer on preceding albums...
Anthony Davis (Variations in Dream-time)
Bob Dylan (Blonde On Blonde)
Paul Bley (Improvisie)
Marion Brown (Afternoon of a Georgia Faun)
Hash Jar Tempo/Bardo Pond/Roy Montgomery (Well-Oiled)
Miles Davis (Bitches Brew)

A lot of jazz musicians:
Kind of Blue was Miles' 33rd studio album
A Love Supreme was Coltrane's 34th
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady was Mingus' 28th
Time Out was Brubeck's 24th
Moanin' was The Jazz Messengers' 10th
Somethin' Else was Cannonball's 8th
Saxophone Colossus was Sonny Rollin's 6th
Head Hunters was Herbie Hancock's 12th.

Also, just from quickly going the the top 100:
Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd's 8th
Revolver was The Beatle's 7th, Abbey Road was their 11th
Pet Sounds was The Beach Boys' 11th
Highway 61 Revisited was Bob Dylan's 6th
Exile On Main St. is The Stones' 10th
Rumours was Fleetwood Mac's 11th
Disintegration is The Cure's 8th
Automatic For The People is R.E.M.'s 8th
What's Going On is Marvin Gaye's 11th
Thriller is Michael Jackson's 6th
The Soft Bulletin is The Flaming Lips' 9th
Back In Black was AC/DC's 7th
Merriweather Post Pavilion is Animal Collective's 8th (except their best album is actually Spirit They're Gone which is their 1st and this site is wrong)

Edit: almost everything I said was posted by somebody else in the time it took to write this. Oh well.

Personally I'd go for Boy...anyhow looking at it the JT was their 5th so doesn't count anyway. Black Celebration (love it btw) might be your favourite but I don't think it's seen as their career high point which Violator was.
