I keep thinking this is Waits's second best after Rain Dogs, with some experimental material and the requisite number of ballads. But it just sounds a little too overwrought to get there. Love the grungey ones like "Goin Out West" and "I Don't Want to Grow Up", but stuff like "Murder in the Red Barn" and "In the Colosseum" drags on and I'm not sure how malicious the result really is. Still, some great experimentation here, with "Such a Scream" being my personal favorite- love how all the different instruments play off each other.

I kind of agree with this one. Just a bit too long and a few songs drag it down. Those two you mentioned plus Black Wings don't feel that essential. However the ballads here are absolutely amazing and it is still my 2nd favourite Waits' album.
