It used to be that television ads used short, clever, catchy "jingles" to sell us products. (Go look up Barry Manilow's contibutions for KFC, Pepsi, Band-Aids, State Farm Insurance, McDonald's, Stridex, Dr. Pepper, and more. You'll appreciate him so much more.)
Well, anyway, it seems that most TV commercials, these days, no longer use original jingles. They just grab a song, pay a few royalty checks out, and slap it onto their product. The ads can be very effective, though, and as a pleasant side-effect, they can also introduce millions of people to new music and artists.
Now, for my discussion question. Share with us some of your favorite commercials that feature a beloved song...or one that introduced you to that song. Here. I'll start.
I'd never heard of Cody Chesnutt. But, after viewing this commercial for Axe body spray, I just had to find this song.
don't have any videos because I don't remember what they were used for (great ads, right?), but I remember that I've heard Buzzcocks 'Everybody's Happy Nowadays' and Iggy Pop's 'Lust for Life' and 'The Passenger' in commercials before. I was shocked, but they worked; well, I liked the commercial but forgot the product
Also, this is a great song and probably one of the greatest and longest beer commercials I have ever seen. And the beer only makes an appearance for, like, a second.

This Levis commercial was the first time me and my friends ever heard of the Steve Miller Band. The song became an instant hit again, 20 years after it was recorded:
