The reason I like TOOTIME a lot is that, unlike a lot of the songs on the 1975's recent album, it's subtly catchy instead of over-the-top. I'm a sucker for chopped up vocal samples and I like how up until the first the chorus the melody is just based on those, so when it brings in the keyboards for the final choruses it manages to feel like a climax while still being fairly low key. The way the chorus uses the 1-2-3-4 progression isn't massively clever but it's pretty fun. "I tell you lies, but it's only sometimes" sets up a story about possible infidelity (whether the narrator actually cheated on his significant other doesn't really matter) in a relationship where both sides want to make it work but are finding it difficult. I'm sure Matt Healy views this song as a big statement on infidelity in the Internet age, but I don't think it needs that framing to work. It also kind of reminds me of the title track from Norman Fucking Rockwell, where a song about the narrator's discontent ends up revealing as much about their own apathy as it does about their significant other's shortcomings. It's kind of flipped here, because the narrator is the one defending themselves, but their defenses suggest some distrust on their end as well. The other main difference between this an NFR is that it's not about a toxic relationship - it's about distractions to what could be a successful relationship and that makes it more optimistic and pessimistic at the same time.
I like "Love it if We Made It" and "Give Yourself a Try" better than this song, but for those I can definitely understand why most people would hate them. TOOTIME seems more universal to me even if it doesn't hit the same kitschy highs as my favorite 1975 songs. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.
Have you listened to their most recent album? If so then I'm probably not going to change your mind because it's the only one I've gotten into so I'm just going to keep posting songs from it. For anyone who's on the fence I'd maybe give this one a shot, it's completely different than the hits from the album and plays around with jazz quite a bit. I personally don't think it's that well-written of a song, as it kind of meanders around, but it's a nice contrast to their poppier stuff. And if you're not a fan of the vocals or personality this really isn't going to change your mind either. Another one kind of in this vein is "Be My Mistake," which is basically a John Mayer song.
I will say I think the band is fairly hit or miss, I like their last album mostly because I love a few of the songs and don't hate the rest.
