- Post subject: Songs That Get Better As They Progress
|
A conversation in another thread led me to think this might be interesting. Name some songs that may be a bit boring or just plain suck at the beginning, but as they progress get better and end up being songs you like. Even a song where just the intro is lacking compared with what follows. Or maybe the whole song is good, but it consistently gets better as it wears on. Scouring my itunes these are some of mine:
I Wonder- Blind Melon (just the intro that I don't like)
Let It Die- Foo Fighters (I like the whole song but it get's better throughout.)
Pendulous Threads- Incubus
No Quarter- Led Zeppelin
Bring It On Home- Led Zeppelin
In The Light- Led Zeppelin (One of their best songs that is unfortunately buried under minutes of annoying, whale sounding guitars.)
Colly Strings- Manchester Orchestra (A bit boring at first but really pays to listen to the whole thing.)
Empty- Metric
Cowboy Dan- Modest Mouse
Release- Pearl Jam
You And Whose Army?- Radiohead
Sleeping Lessons- The Shins (Love the whole song but it consistently builds and gets better.)
Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans- Smashing Pumpkins
Poor Places- Wilco (Another great one all the way that's always getting better.)

disagree, the first segment is the only part that's really good. the rest is mediocre, but the production is appealing and it's a three-part song, so everyone goes crazy.
the one that I think of immediately is "Exit Music (For a Film)." Also "Rock n Roll Suicide" by Bowie. _________________ My top songs of the 2010s

Whaaaaat? The intro is one of the greatest things I've ever heard. I think it stays great throughout but it certainly can't get better than the intro.

You might as well have said Disorder or Only Shallow _________________ She's dead, wrapped in plastic.

"I'm going up Going over to Montana, You got yourself a trucker's atlas, You knew you were all hot, Maybe you'll go and blow a gasket, You start at the northwest corner, Go down through California, Beeline you might drive three days, Three nights to the tip of Florida"
That's probably my favorite part of any song, of course Trucker's atlas isn't my favorite song, but it just contains my favorite segment (and my favorite drumbeat).

Definitely Stairway. The first half is AMAZING, but fuck, that buildup that climaxes with the solo and then Plant going fucking psycho is possibly the most satisfying thing I've ever experienced from a song. Ever.
Agree with the sentiment about "You And Whose Army?", though again, I love the beginning.
Could argue that Paranoid Android and No Surprises fall into this category as well.
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Octavarium, The Count of Tuscany, the Twelve-step Suite as a whole, and possibly A Change of Seasons all do this for me as well. I'm not sure about ACoS because I love all seven movements, but there's certainly an argument to be made that The Crimson Sunset makes an epic, perfect finale. The same goes for how The Shattered Fortress finishes off the Twelve-step Suite.
