hmmm...found a compilation site of early hits of the 1900s...only 1909 entries are:

39. Put On Your Old Grey Bonnet - 1909 (by Stanley Murphy & Percy Wenrich)
70. I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now - 1909 (by Will M. Hough & Frank R. Adams, Joseph E. Howard & Harold Orlob)
76. By the Light of the Silvery Moon - 1909 (by Edward Madden & Gus Edwards)
100. Uncle Josh in Society - 1909

Search was for "Irish pop hits 1909" but unfortunately the country of these hits isn't mentioned (probably U.S. - Anchors Aweigh, the traditional Navy song, was listed). That list is at http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/...1900s.html

It's possible they didn't track charts in Ireland or the U.K. back then, you know. I'll work on a few more searches for you, though.

Found these:
Has Anybody Seen Kelly? (1909)
I've Got Rings on My Fingers (1909)

http://www.pdinfo.com/source/D267555.htm sheet music book of popular Irish songs.

Otherwise, just use your favorite search engine (google, yahoo, bing, etc.) and find variations on the search topic "Irish songs 1909" to try and bring up sites that might have hidden gems. There seems to be no real compilation of British or Irish hit songs from 1909.

There is an Irish folk music topic on wikipedia too, that may turn something up for you.

"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is a Negro spiritual. The first recording was by the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1909. It was written in 1862 by Wallace Willis. Not sure if that would have been popular in the UK in 1909. The Fisk Jubilee Singers are an African American a cappella ensemble, consisting of students at Fisk University, that was first organized in 1871.

Back in 1909, most music was performed live but I doubt the Jubilee Singers went to the UK that year. (Not sure of the wide availability of radio or recordings in 1909.) Perhaps more popular would have been the traditional Irish music or classical pieces.
