I feel like Bob Dylan is almost rapping on "Subterranean Homesick Blues".

I've never heard that Within Temptation song before. It was certainly unique. It's about the last place you'd ever expect to hear a rap solo. Was very interesting.

I

I agree. That's one of the earliest examples I've heard so far. All the other earliest examples of rapping were country songs.
Like about 1971, 1972. I'm sure there's earlier examples but I'm not aware of them yet. There's a such thing as Talking Blues or something like that, but it was more like just plain talking over the music rather than rapping to the music. They just stop singing for a minute and started talking. Was more like spoken word then rapping.

Of course there are The Last Poets -- first album: The Last Poets (1970) -- and Gil Scott-Heron, or are they too obvious?

No, those are good ones. It's way back in the early seventies too. Good thinking. Applause Applause

Talking to the rhythm of the music. I can't think of a simpler definition. Although I'm sure everybody and their grandmother has a different definition of what it is.
