Interesting point, and to an extent is true, but when you look at the 00's, 90% of the good music was made my independent labels Confused

But also, some independant labels are owned by major record companies anyway. I think it's more for the sake of being an "indie band" than anything. The title seems to warrant more respect.

here are some 'indie essentials,' whether I like them or not (and though 'indie' is as loose a term as a hooker's vag). I suppose these are some albums that 'indie' kids are expected to have listened to...

Arcade Fire-Funeral
LCD Soundsystem-This Is Happening
Minutemen-Double Nickels on the Dime
My Bloody Valentine-Loveless
Neutral Milk Hotel-In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Pavement-Slanted and Enchanted
Pavement-Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Pixies-Doolittle
Pixies-Surfer Rosa
PJ Harvey-Rid of Me
The Replacements-Let It Be
Slint-Spiderland
Smiths-The Queen is Dead
Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation
Spoon-Kill the Moonlight
Weezer-Blue Album
Wilco-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

if you want an amazing compilation of '80s indie music, check out 'Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the '80s Underground'

as for the '90s, here are some other essentials...
Modest Mouse-Lonesome Crowded West
Dismemberment Plan-Emergency and I
Built to Spill-Perfect From Now On
Beta Band-3 EPs

bottom line, if you want to get into 'indie' culture, start out by listening to the top 20s from each of Pitchfork's decade lists

You've already heard Boxer, which is high upon the plateau of indie music, so everything will basically just be downhill from there.
