Post subject: Favourite female vocalists of all-time
In my view, women are uniquelly positioned to add an element to music that is denied to men. Women's voices at their best literally have the potential to add a dimension to music akin to a musical instrument. Meredith Monk's pioneering experiments with the human voice was the catalyst for this approach amongst many subsequent female artists. At their very best, female vocalists have the power to transport you to another place and time whilst simultaneously adding an emotional power and depth to music. It is within this context that I list my favourite 10 female vocalists of all-time:
Top 10 (In no particular order):
Dorothy Moskowitz (United States Of America)
Sinead O'Connor
Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane)
Mimi Goese (Hugo Largo)
Liz Frazer (Cocteau Twins)
Patti Smith
Alanis Morissette
Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Mary Margaret O'Hara
