Who's the best bass players ever? These are my favorite ones.

James Jamerson. ( Motown bass player)

Klaus Voormann. (session guy; John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo, Lou Reed, Harry Nilsson, Carly Simon, BB King, Donovan, Randy Newman, and just about every other great seventies studio album)

Carol Kaye. ( session gal: Frank Zappa, Beach Boys, Neil Young, Phil Spector and THOUSANDS more) (she was the bass player on PET
SOUNDS !!!)

Paul McCartney (Beatles)

Bernard Edwards (Chic)

McCartney's great, obviously.

Others:

Bruce Thomas (the Attractions)
Aston Barrett (Wailers)
Flea (RHCP)
Ben Sheppard (Soundgarden)

That's all I can think of right now. My favourite bass players have a prominent role, and write memorable lines (not necessarily singable, but standout)

Percy Jones (Brand X, Brian Eno)
Bootsy Collins
Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report, Joni Mitchell)
Larry Graham (Sly & The Family Stone, Graham Central Station, Betty Davis)
Jack Bruce
George Porter Jr. (Meters, Paul McCartney, David Byrne, Tori Amos, Dr. John)
Chris Squire (Yes)
John Entwistle (The Who)
Holger Czukay (Can)
Jerry Jemmott (like James Jamerson a great R&B session musician -- Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Gil-Scott Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," King Curtis' "Memphis Soul Stew")

Rock and Blues are arguably the best guitar genres, but when it comes to the bass, it's The Funk.

Yeah I like most of them too. There's only 2 I never heard of. But I only count two or three Funk ones there on your list tho, contradicting what you said.
Jack Bruce is also my favorite rock singer ever too.

Me too. All the ones I like all do something memorable in a song that everyone recognizes and remembers.

I feel all of these players bring an added dimension to the bands music so I’d go for these...as I’m not a musician I have no idea how technically great they are though

Jah Wobble (PIL)
Mani (Stone Roses)
Simon Gallop (The Cure)
Krist Novoselic (Nirvana)
Alex James (Blur)
Kim Deal (Pixies)

Very Happy Posting lists here does tend to prod me into being more inclusive genre-wise. And I put the funk bassists near the top. Percy Jones, though mostly associated with art rock/prog, is massively funky. Jerry Jemmott's pretty funky too -- I mean "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" -- c'mon!

Aston Barrett's a great choice. Robbie Shakespeare's incredible too.

Sorry to be cliche' but it just simply has to be McCartney.

Never has a bass player been so melodic, versatile.
