Alright ladies(?) and gentlemen, I'm here to host our next list. Should be fun to see whether this goes the safe route or winds up being an edgy hipster list.

The rules are simple... There really are none. This, like most lists, is titled "Best Ever..." but don't go too hard trying to judge it objectively because it's pretty much impossible when comparing classic acting to method acting, or leading actors to character actors, or award winners to box office draws. I want this to pertain to film actors but realistically a lot of big TV stars are in movies and vice versa these days. Just go with your heart and let's see what we come up with, ok?

The only rule is that you list actors and actresses separately, in two lists of up to 50.

Lists can be posted here or sent to me via PM.

Have fun. I'll have my list posted very soon. I hope we get a decent turnout. I'm thinking January 31st would make a good deadline but if you guys feel like you need more time that's cool.

Ah Christ this'll be difficult.

But okay, I'll give it a spin. No clue who my #1's will even be to be honest.

Dammit, you're right. I'm gonna need some time too. I had what I thought was my unranked choices ready before I even posted this and now I'm really having trouble distinguishing favorite from best. It's hard comparing the likes of Udo Kier and Joe Spinell to a Laurence Olivier because there's really not even enough evidence to suggest the former two are in the latter's league but man they're some interesting looking dudes so I don't know, I like looking at them more Embarassed ... Yeah I guess I'm gonna restructure and go for a more traditional approach. Sorry Michael Rooker, Brad Dourif and Eli Wallach Sad

I need to get through this busy holiday weekend before I can give this much thought. But I can say for sure Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, and George Sanders will be high on my list.

I have my list up to a set 50, so now I'll just have to split by gender and expand to 50 each in the coming month. Looking forward to this!

Okay. I had a change of heart and am going with the initial plan, starting with the men's list. Screw doing some generic crap, whether it's an "acting" list or a "movie stars" list (Daniel Day-Lewis or Jack Nicholson would have been my #1 if I did either of those). Totally personal list with a lot of people who might make either list and quite a handful that wouldn't. In countdown style because I'm doing this in real time since I'm honestly not too sure who will be #1 myself. The women's list there's no question at all who my favorite is, but that'll have to wait until another day...

50. Michael Rooker
49. Claude Rains
48. Leonardo DiCaprio
47. Burt Lancaster
46. Charles Bronson
45. Montgomery Clift
44. Paul Dano
43. Peter O'Toole
42. Joe Spinell
41. Peter Cushing
40. Toshiro Mifune
39. Jeff Bridges
38. Kurt Russell
37. Peter Sellers
36. James Cagney
35. Gene Hackman
34. Michael Caine
33. Robert Duvall
32. Laurence Olivier
31. Paul Newman
30. Jack Lemmon
29. Robert Mitchum
28. Dennis Hopper
27. Ernest Borgnine
26. Al Pacino
25. Jack Nicholson
24. Alec Guinness
23. Eli Wallach
22. Fredric March
21. Kirk Douglas
20. Donald Sutherland
19. Lee Marvin
18. Buster Keaton
17. Boris Karloff
16. Gary Oldman
15. Robert De Niro
14. Brad Dourif
13. Lon Chaney
12. Marlon Brando
11. Dustin Hoffman
10. Max von Sydow
9. Udo Kier
8. Spencer Tracy
7. Henry Fonda
6. Daniel Day-Lewis
5. James Stewart
4. Philip Seymour Hoffman
3. Christopher Lee
2. Sean Penn
1. Charlie Chaplin

And after all that of not being sure I found myself finishing my list with the same person as I did on my Comedies, 1930s, Directors, and All Time list. Even though Chaplin played the same character through the majority of his career, it was the perfect character and gave him plenty of opportunity to show a wide range of emotions. His infrequent late films are just further evidence that he understood acting better than anyone.

Well it's late so I've got some alone time in between festivities to listen to some tunes and do my actress list. Much like women are generally known to pick their favorite actors, I tend to give major bonus points to certain actresses for being my cup of tea if you know what I mean. While generally I don't like bad actresses, there are gonna be a few women here who will reach a lofty position ahead of far more talented women simply because of how much I want to smash. Basically the same reason Udo Kier is in my top 10 males. What a beautiful man...

50. Grace Kelly
49. Claudia Cardinale
48. Naomi Watts
47. Elizabeth Taylor
46. Isabelle Huppert
45. Ruth Gordon
44. Kim Novak
43. Maggie Smith
42. Shelley Winters
41. Nicole Kidman
40. Andie MacDowell
39. Tilda Swinton
38. Vivien Leigh
37. Vanessa Redgrave
36. Ellen Burstyn
35. Helen Mirren
34. Judi Dench
33. Julianne Moore
32. Olivia de Havilland
31. Brigitte Bardot
30. Catherine Deneuve
29. Isabelle Adjani
28. Uma Thurman
27. Deborah Kerr
26. Diane Keaton
25. Susan Sarandon
24. Kate Winslet
23. Barbara Stanwyck
22. Charlotte Gainsbourgh
21. Pam Grier
20. Katharine Hepburn
19. Anna Karina
18. Anne Bancroft
17. Julie Christie
16. Frances McDormand
15. Amy Adams
14. Joan Crawford
13. Shirley MacLaine
12. Jane Fonda
11. Gena Rowlands
10. Faye Dunaway
9. Sissy Spacek
8. Cate Blanchett
7. Ingrid Bergman
6. Liv Ullmann
5. Meryl Streep
4. Claudette Colbert
3. Marlene Dietrich
2. Bette Davis
1. Greta Garbo

(List will be revised; comments left for reference regarding the rest of this post)

Oh my goodness. HAHAHA. After all, BEA is a male-dominated site, and this a male-dominated thread with making lists of our favorite actresses a key component thereof. I had the feeling somebody was gonna say something like this at some point. I just didn't think it would be so soon.

By the way, great lists badseed, plenty of terrific talent on both.

However, if everybody listed their top actresses by how attractive they are...well, uh, it would be a double standard to not list your top actors by the same criterion.

Well it was only one criteria, not all. Out of any actress working I would most like to hook up with Alexandra Daddario but there's no way she was making my list. Also Adele Exarchopoulous but I have still only seen the one movie with her so I don't know if she is even that good or if Kechiche's reported verbal abuse of the stars is what made her performance so great. But watching movies is a visual experience so yeah it happens. Garbo probably edged out Davis for #1 by such a small margin that her looks probably won it for her. A lot of European women. Bardot particularly, wouldn't even be top 100 if I just judged her by acting.

Hope everyone is having a good Christmas/holiday
