1971 cleary has the biggest number of classics and high quality albums and it's really hard to argue against it being one of the greatests years ever. However, I still chose 1975 simply because it has 4 albums in my top 20 of all time and that's a feat no other year has. It definitely doesn't have the depth of 1971 or even 1970 and 1973 but it felt right to vote for it given the fact it has the highest peak of all years. _________________ All time

I was thinking today, the results of your poll would have been quite different if the rounds were divided differently. You've gone for decades, but it would've made some sense musically (not chronologically) to divide the rounds like this:
1956-1966
1967-1976
1977-1986
1987-1996
1997-2006
2007-2017
Obviously, you'd have had different years competing against each other. 1967-1976 would've been very hard fought. |
No no, I see what you mean, no fly in the ointment at all. At the end of all this it's just for fun and to spark discussion anyway. That's an interesting way of looking at it, especially breaking 65/66 and 67-69 up. Thanks for your input! _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Because of this thread I've spent the last few days reviewing and updating my 1970 list. Such a strong year. I'm partial to singer/song-writer stuff, and there's a lot of that, but also rock albums and jazz.
1970 will probably get my vote, but I'm also halfway through 1971, so I'm reserving judgement until the last minute.
1970 Albums (less common choices in bold)
1 Moondance - Van Morrison
2 Ladies Of The Canyon - Joni Mitchell
3 Sweet Baby James - James Taylor
4 Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon And Garfunkel
5 After The Gold Rush - Neil Young
6 All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
7 Everything Is Everything - Donny Hathaway
8 Led Zeppelin III - Led Zeppelin
9 Let It Be - The Beatles
10 Band Of Gypsys - Jimi Hendrix
11 Morrison Hotel - The Doors
12 John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon
13 Cosmo's Factory - Creedence Clearwater Revival
14 Abraxas - Santana
15 McCartney - Paul McCartney
16 Tumbleweed Connection - Elton John
17 Elton John - Elton John
18 His Band And The Street Choir - Van Morrison
19 Fire And Water - Free
20 Chicago II - Chicago
21 Pendulum - Creedence Clearwater Revival
22 Bruce Cockburn - Bruce Cockburn
23 American Beauty - Grateful Dead
24 We'll Get Over - The Staple Singers
25 Toussaint - Allen Toussaint
26 Ry Cooder - Ry Cooder
27 Spirit In The Dark - Aretha Franklin

That is quite the list of albums. 1970 was indeed an impeccable year for music. Hopefully there is still time left to vote. I only set the poll to last for 5 days so I'm not sure if you're still able to vote. Let me know! _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Bowie did the brother/sister album concept with Low and "Heroes" better than anyone's combo I've heard so far. In the same amazing year no less. From the flow of the album to their respective instrumental/experimental tracks to their fucking covers, they are two totally different albums but one in the same. They have perfect contrasting colors just like their album covers. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

I had Bryter Later in 1970, too. Then I noticed it had 1971 as the date on BEA. So I moved it. Weird.

This is what the BEA stats say about the 70's.
Top 10 and top 50 overall rank average compared for each year.
If you go by top 10 it's 71, 70, 77.
If you go by top 50 it's 70, 71, 73.
And if you went by #1 it'd be 73, 71, 75.
