[/i]Trout Mask Replica is an incredible album but people talk about it like it's some inscrutable cipher materialised out of the ether. It was made by Beefheart doodling on a piano he had no idea how to play, and John French transcribing those doodles and turning it into actual music. It's an incredible achievement, and it's a difficult album on first listen for sure, but once you stop trying to wrestle the individual tracks into uniform and familiar structures and let the whole thing wash over you, a veil falls and it goes from frustrating to bracing. |
great back story!!!
& completely agree with the rest.

I think worst is people that think it is some "inscrutable cipher" and that they're one of the few that have deciphered it. It's a a stupid, directionless, meaningless album that sounds terrible. It doesn't sound terrible because it's artistry is above understanding, it sounds terrible because it's a bunch of talented dudes in a room taking the piss. I fucking love it.
That said, yeah, strange albums to compare to one another. I'd go for Trout, but it's just preference.

WL/WH by a mile. I've given TMR 3 or 4 listens, and the best I can say is that it's interesting. It hurts my ears, but it's interesting. WL/WH is my favourite Velvet album, and one the best albums of the 60s. Easy choice for me.

Yep. The secret is that there is no secret. If it was made for any purpose, it was to make people look foolish trying to work it out.

That YouTube dissection of frownland is fantastic I so enjoyed it when I discovered it a little bit ago. That guy is the best dissector of music I have ever listened to and I don't know crap about how to play anything but a stereo.
