What about The Smile Sessions? And Smiley Smile?

No on Smiley Smile, but is The Smile Sessions an official album? I know Ive heard it once before, a few years back, but I feel like I may be mixing it (or some of it) up with the proper Smile album. So I'll look into that one.

I have to agree that Smile (re-released in 2004) is the best incarnation of the project. The Sessions just help break down the moving parts better (some of it might be better takes or what have you, but it's not an album).

It's an official Beach Boys release. RYM has it listed correctly as an archival album. BEA has it listed confusingly as a compilation. Instead of re-recordings, it consists of the original recordings for the Smile project. This gives it advantages over the 2004 album in technical execution, because it's all the Beach Boys in their prime, instead of only Brian Wilson past his prime. The first 19 tracks (ending with Good Vibrations) constitute the proper album, with the rest being outtakes.

I would think The Smile Sessions would be more appealing to you than Pet Sounds, because of its higher level of artistic and conceptual ambition and its use of progressive and experimental (for the time, anyway) pop song structures.

Thank you! Hmmmm, for listing purposes, it can be annoying when artists release various incarnations of the same work! Laughing

Okay, I know Ive heard it then. It sounds like I should revisit it them both, decide which is better, and rate/rank that one for my entry, then perhaps include a rating (if different) for the other in parenthesis beside it -- something like that...

Re: Pet Sounds better? ... Smile may be better in the end. Some of these ratings are kind of old. Ill compare them again when I revisit. Pet Sounds has its advantages too. A certain perfection of form and the baroque pop format. A clear, sustained and measured sense of aesthetic, gradation, conceptualization and elicitation of emotional purpose. Again, Ill double check the comparison upon revisits. The difference is marginal either way.

Haven't heard the rest yet, except parts of 808s
