It's that time of year again! Almost. Ish. Starting this thread early. Deadline will be in April.

Did you see that movie where she has sex with a fish? Wasn't that great? Or when that thing happened to that peach. What a time to be alive.

Here's a thread where we can discuss/rec our favourite films and performances of the year, hopefully dishing out a couple recs to anyone who wants them Razz Was that film overrated? Underappreciated? Disappointing? Etc... Was TV a bigger powerhouse in 2017? Did festivals disappoint? Does it feel like every second movie you see advertised has superheros in it? Discuss.

SUBCATAGORIES:

5 Best Male Performances
&
5 Best Female Performances

Which you may submit up to 10 performances each, but the final list will be the top 5.

I also insist that users include a note as to what they considered the 'biggest surprise' or 'most underrated' film of the year. This won't be tallied, but hopefully it will shell out some recommendations.

The gist/ rules:

BEA's composes a list of our 50 favourite films of 2017.

All lists will be PMed to me, maxing out at 50. The final list will be 50 films. I'll be accepting lists of any denotation up to 50. The size of your list determines its weight. Films must be longer than 40 minutes. Films must have an international premiere date between January 1st 2017 and December 31st 2017.

Documentaries are allowed.

Lists will also be accepted in IMDb and Letterboxd format. Deadline will be April 12th.

Releases that are not allowed:
Big Little Lies
Twin Peaks (sorry)
Finding Frances
Music videos
Comedy specials
DAMN.

Hayden's "you gotta watch these before making your list" list.

All three of these films have incredible scores as well, hoping BEA appreciates them.

You Were Never Really Here (A Beautiful Day) is somewhat similar to ingesting a party drug, but Joaquin Phoenix is there. Also, if you thought Jonny Greenwood's score for Phantom Thread was good... well...

The Breadwinner: from the team that brought you Song Of The Sea and Secret of Kells, I don't recommend watching this with your kids. This is some Asghar Farhadi stuff wrapped up as an ice cream cone.

Felicite, set in the heart of Senegal, is one of those films that makes you remember what it is to be alive. It's a big world. It's a harsh world. Own it. Also, easily (eeeaasssilllyyy) one of the best lead performances of the year.

This is high on my... 2018 anticipated list. Not even watchable in the US until April. But I can't wait to see it.

This is my unedited list. Everything here had a Oscar-eligible premiere in 2017. But if you want to tell me one or more of these films premiered at Cannes or something in 2016 and shouldn't be eligible even though I definitely didn't have the means to go to any film festivals, it's cool. I'll take it off and go to the next film on my list.

1. Blade Runner 2049
2. Dunkirk
3. Brigsby Bear
4. Lady Bird
5. Darkest Hour
6. War For The Planet Of The Apes
7. Wind River
8. Columbus
9. The Shack
10. Hostiles

11. The Big Sick
12. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
13. The Discovery
14. Gifted
15. The Post
16. Baby Driver
17. Phantom Thread
18. Wonder Woman
19. Molly’s Game
20. Get Out

21. Spielberg (Documentary)
22. Call Me By Your Name
23. Last Flag Flying
24. Murder On The Orient Express
25. On Body And Soul
26. Detroit
27. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
28. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
29. Logan Lucky
30. Thor: Ragnarok

31. Stronger
32. Professor Marston And The Wonder Women
33. The Greatest Showman
34. Split
35. Spider-Man: Homecoming
36. Song To Song
37. Logan
38. Goodbye Christopher Robin
39. Beauty and the Beast
40. Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond - Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton

41. It
42. It’s Only The End Of The World
43. The Only Living Boy In New York
44. Una
45. Coco
46. John Wick Chapter 2
47. Roman J. Israel, Esq.
48. Brad’s Status
49. I, Tonya
50. Their Finest

I'm working on my personal blog post about my top 10 by the end of the month hopefully, so once that's done I'll come back and make a pitch for you guys to watch my most underrated/overlooked: Hostiles, Columbus, and especially Brigsby Bear. I'll also put my performances in that post here.

Def do. Did a double screening of You Were Never Really Here along with The Square back in November, and they complement each other surprisingly well (I think their trailers even shared a song?). No clue why Ramsay's waiting so long for the US release... Think Phoenix deserved an Oscar nom over Denzel, no question, but I'm not sure if it was eligible... The editing is also phenomenal.

I expect all BEA members to do this, yes.

I suppose it's all good. Spotted the two films you're talking about. Una's totally fine, and Dolan's film is a stretch but I figure it's okay (mid-2017 US release). No worries.

I can move It's Only The End of the World off my list if you'd like, but it's in the 40s and I doubt it would get the support from others to make the final anyhow.

Didn't You Were Never Really Here premiere at some early 2017 festival, like Cannes or even Sundance? April does seem like a long time to wait for a wide release. Regardless, it was high on my list, and after I heard Greenwood's Phantom Thread score I became even more excited for this.

Do whatever you want Razz I'm fond of It's Only The End of The World, one of my fav's of 2016 (saw it in Canada... not exactly sure when it came out in the US). Pumped for Dolan's upcoming English debut (hoping it works out for the best... cutting Chastain seems like an odd choice...)

And yeah, You Were Never Really Here debuted at Cannes (Ramsay finished the film hours before it screened Laughing). It was released wide in France under 'A Beautiful Day', which was also... odd... but whatever. Either way, clearly one of the year's best. Hoping you enjoy it once you get a chance to see it.

Huh, that's weird. That Phoenix movie is even an Amazon Studios production. Weird that they wouldn't release it in the US. Oh well.

I've still got a lot to catch up on, but here's the list as is. I've seen a lot stinkers this year that I don't feel comfortable putting on the list just to pad it.

However, I enjoy watching so bad they're good movies, so I might put on a few of those that I thought were so poorly made they were hilarious. Did anybody else see Wish Upon?

Brawl in Cell Block 99
The Big Sick
Get Out
Baby Driver
Wind River
War for the Planet of the Apes
Spiderman Homecoming
Logan Lucky
Lucky
Mayhem
Split
Brigsby Bear
Blade Runner 2049
Good Time
Ingrid Goes West
John Wick Chapter 2
The Meyerowitz Stories
The Post
Raw (it was released here in 2017)
Okja
Captain Underpants: The First Movie)
A Ghost Story

*Not sure if The Devil's Candy is allowed. It hit film festivals in 2015 but didn't get a proper release until March of 2017 and is on most horror buffs' 2017 year end lists. Same exact story for The Lure, give or take a month or two.

** Split is also in the category of being a 2016 film that almost nobody could have possibly seen until 2017, a la Ex Machina a couple years back.
