Van Halen was one of my favorite bands for a really long time, I've been so busy lately with other music I haven't had a chance to listen to them in a while. This album, along with its predecessor Women and Children First, are masterpieces. The music they were making around this time was the final great form of guitar driven hard rock before the genre went overkill. As a band they were in their prime around this time, both live and in the studio. I wish these albums got more attention here.

Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac accurately noted that Van Halen made sub-par records to many of his contemporaries and was basically a one man show.

Women And Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down...all mediocre and overrated stuff. If not for some pop hits on 1984, and in a perfect world, Van Halen should have been done after 2 albums.

First listened to Fair Warning about ten years ago. Most recently listened to it about three months ago. It hasn't aged well for me, though the same could be said for a lot of Van Halen music. Unchained is the only track I want to regularly listen to nowadays. Unchained is really cool track though. Van Halen's formula at its best, and it breaks the fourth wall when the producer chimes in: 'Come on Dave, give me a break.'

I wonder if this was written into the song in advance or if it happened during recording. Either way, I love it when art breaks the fourth wall. I don't know why.
