I inherited a Sony PS-LX155A with a Sony STR-S255 that is probably 30 years old. It'd ok, but it's starting to short out and when I look it up, it probably isn't that great to sink money into repair.

I'm in the market to get a new one and am debating on models in the $300 range, as that's probably what I could afford, but it seems like there's a decent amount of debate on what's good in this range. Then there's Randy's Records that has a few used ones worth looking at and probably goodwill type places. But I would probably pull a samsonite.

What kind of turn table do you have?

Did it break the bank or did you find a steal?

Do you like it or are hoping for an upgrade?

Mine's a Pioneer... something. I got it second hand from a guy I know, and I don't know the exact model. Looks similar to a PL-12D though. Belt driven. Its awesome. I love the sound of it and it works very well. I think it needs a new belt, but that's all.

I've got an SL-D2 by Technics. Great table for the price if you can find a decent one used.

I'd recommend buying used as opposed to new, unless you're willing to part with a couple thousand dollars.

Thanks for the feedback. I've heard buy used a few times now - I'll totally have to hit up randy's records or look online for something used as a comparison.

I've been having an eye on this thing because it has all the bells and whistles I want, but I've heard less awesome things about the pre-amp... if I do a line instead of phono to powered speakers, doesn't that by-pass that? Also I can switch out the cartridge as many others suggest.

Then of course there's EQ.

I bought a new Project Debut Carbon Esprit a couple of years ago. It’s the only one I’ve owned as an adult, so I have nothing to compare it to.

About pre-amp - I tried putting mine directly into speakers as a line in, and still needed a pre-amp. It might differ depending on your setup, but that's my experience.

That's another one I've looked at. What do you think?

Yeah for sure - I think the Kliptsch speakers seem to take care of the pre-amp for me, but I haven't tested to be sure. I don't think the audioengine ones would.

I'm a bit of a Rega fan. The Rega P1 is a lovely turntable and in your price range. The P2 is just above what you want to spend but is a lovely bit of kit. I've got the P3 which I absolutely love. Good hunting.
